    Under or Over for Plastics

Because most of my fishing is done casting lures, all bar one of my rods and reels are baitcasting outfits - the rods ranging from 5' to 6' only ( I'm a bit short in the wheelbase ).

Therefore, I find none of my combos are suited well to casting soft plastics.

I want to get a new outfit for casting plastics for Barra but because I feel more comfortable with baitcasters this was the direction I wanted to go - with a longer rod of course.

So my question is; What are the pros/cons of using an overhead combo vs a threadline outfit for casting SP's?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Andrew.

Andrew .... I love casting plastics for barra ...... & I cant seem to embrace spin gear.
Now ..... I did work out that a longer rod casts better !!!!(no rocket science) & considering most barra fishing with plastics involves longer casts to weed / points ...... a 6'8"- 7ft BC rod is ideal ( just get a quality one) ...... I have a Loomis BCR855 GLX (7ft 1") - Its great as it will cast a 100mm slick rig or 60g 6" Swim shad! ..... with aplomb
Now there are a few cheaper rods that will do that too but you still need to spend a few hundred as most cheaper rods fall into the shorter 6' - 6'6" range ........ Great for HBs - but fall short on the plastics IMO .
Now while spin gear is making inroads into the plastic / barra scene ....... many of us still think the baitcast outfit rules ....... besides spin reels retrieve too fast

    Cheers Chris.

I knew all I had to do was mention the word Barra and you'd smell this thread six chatboards away!

Not that I've looked too hard at the range of late, I plan on getting another Egrell that will fit the bill.

    Cheers, Andrew

Cant help myself ....... I went through this crap a couple of years ago - & yes longer rods rule ........ I dont get my butt absolutely kicked by someone using spin gear ....... so why change.
There is a Egrel that should suit fine .... B6-L ??????

    Hey mate,

I've gotta B6-L and use that to cast 4-6 inch swim baits however I find that the "softness" in the tip has a direct effect on the action of the plastic. It has just become engaged to a zillion HSA which is a better match considering it had a crazy cranker on previously. The high speed of the zillion is a lot better in picking up slack line than the 4.9 retrieve of the crazy cranker. I do prefer spin gear for throwing lighter plastics because it is easier to maintain better rod angles and easier to pick up slack line however throwing the bigger swim baits I find the baitcaster more suitable.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with rod length especially if you are throwing larger pre rigged swim baits as most of them get quite heavy and will still cast a mile even on a shorter rod 6'6 or so. I have used a 6'3 medalist previously and find it really great due to the stiffness in the tip.

    Cheers Scott
