Thread: ETec & 27 Mhz Not Compatible

Re: ETec & 27 Mhz Not Compatible

Sorry for not replying sooner fellows. I'm not wasting anymore time trying to fix an old technology problem. As I mentioned i have fitted a VHF radio. Spoke to the NSW Maritime Department and there is no requirement to possess any qualifications to operate one in Australia.
Owing an Etec is worth the radio upgrade.

"Spoke to the NSW Maritime Department and there is no requirement to possess any qualifications to operate one in Australia."

    1. Would strongly recommend that you go back and find someone else in the NSW Maritime Department that can provide you with the right response.

    2. That response is not correct.

SSMojo - Thanks for the thread it is one of the most valuable on the Forum - especially if it finds an answer.

    The statement:

"Spoke to the NSW Maritime Department and there is no requirement to possess any qualifications to operate one in Australia" is wrong - get that persons name as you'll need it to defend your case if caught.

The Australian Government requires anyone using a VHF radio to be a holder of a "Marine Radio Operator's Certificiate of Proficiency" under the Radiocommunications Act. Most VMR's and Coast Guards run the courses.

Grab his name and get a written authorization to say you do not need qualifications to operate a VHF then.
This guy does not deserve a job there spreading false information like this.
I'll have to say that most people do not bother to get one but it is a legal requirement to have one and fines can be given out... but I've never heard of anyone getting fined.
Another good reason to get the license is the ability to use the DSC function on a lot of VHF radios now-a-days.

I'd be checking the connections from the aerial to the radio.
Have you checked the aerial as it might be cactus as well.
    Is the squelch knob working??
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

Am I correct in saying that anyone can use a VHF in an emergency??

So Maritime may not be 100% wrong.

Yes, its legal to use a radio in an emergency, however this should have been clearly stated if that is what they meant.
