New Rods - What To get! Need Advice!

    Hey Guys,

I'm out to buy a couple of new rods.. as some of you might of seen in my post under saltwater fishing, I'm aiming for Whiting, Bream, Tailor, Trevally for the most part.

So I'm thinking to get 2 rods maybe, a lighter one for the whiting & bream and a heavier one for the tailor / trevally.

I'd love to hear everyones suggestions and advice, I unfortunately don't get the opportunity to fish all the time and Christmas left me a little broke, so I'm trying to keep the set ups under 100 - 150 dollars for each rod. so 200 - 300 total.

I did look at some k-mart rods and thought about just settling for that, but I figured it's probably going to be worth the extra $$ to go out and get a decent rod?

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

    Cheers,
    Dan

Have a look at a Shimano raider rack spin at $139.00 for your light work or a Shimano starlo stik tournament pro at around $150.00 both are half reasonable for the cash.A cheap option could be say a starlo stix light spin at around $70.00 which is a near unbreakable fibre composite but way heavier and has less feel than the previous two.
as for the trevs well maybe someone up that way would be able to recommend something suitable.
    All the best
    Cheers

I picked up a Starlo Stix Squidgy Spin M for $74.95.. That just can't be beaten in my opinion.

Awsome thanks for the replies so far, really appreciate it guys! - As a second note where's a good tackle shop to pick one of these up & have a look? I'm hoping for a online one... or one in Brisbane as I leave for the coast this weekend.
I checked out BCF as a lot of people mention that shop but I haven't been able to find these rod's on there..

Dan, where do you plan on fishing for tailor and trevally? Beach, rocks, estuary?? for the beach i use a 13'6" gary howard, it is around 200 so out of your budget, but there are a couple of great cheaper models, wilson make lots of good surf rods at great prices. If you plan to fish the estuaries from a bank, try something around 10 - 11 foot, out of a boat perhaps 7 foot.

    cheers

    Hey Owen,

Thanks for that mate, I think mostly I'll be estuary fishing at Burleigh Heads, if aynone knows some good rocks to fish from around that area I'd love to try that too.
I'm trying to avoid a surf rod (as I'm going down my train with some friends) don't want to have a huge surf rod on me.

So if you got any more rod suggestions / where to fish, I'd love to hear em.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Dan, I have never fished that area before in the estuaries, but have fished the gold coast beaches with good results. surf rods come in two piece format, some are also three piece. don't know about the rocks too much. the north coast of nsw has great fishing in the estuaries and beaches.

One thing you could do is go into a local independent tackle shop (Tackle wharehouse in brisbane) where the staff generally know what they are talking about.

    Just an idea

Hey Owen, thanks for the info mate! really appreciate it, could you give any tips about which beaches are best to go for & what you've caught there?

I might consider a surf rod if they break into 3 pieces - I didn't know there was 3 piece ones available... but that wouldn't be so bad to carry on a train / bus if it was a 3 piece break down. - So in that case Beach fishing may be an option, do you know of any good 3 piece beach rods?

And yeah Snagking, I was thinking that myself - going to a local tackle shop and asking, just thought I'd also see if anyone here had any advice as I know there's more then a few experienced people on here so any extra advice I can get before I go out and buy is always good.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Re: New Rods - What To get! Need Advice!

When i was deciding what rod to get I found the most helpful thing was to identify the line weight you need (tackling big fish?) and casting weight (casting lures?).

Then you can look at the different brands from there

I got a Shimano Raider this week. 4-7kg, 7-21g casting weight. Works well for me Wouldn't have minded having a lower casting weight but i guess it'll mean i'll be casting heavier metals and such.

    Hope that helps

Hey Walugi, yeah good idea mate, might do that and also go ask the people at the tackle store their opinions ... as well as of course use any advice of here of course =D

At least I've settled on my lighter rod, I think for that I'm gunna go for a Starlo Stix Squidgy Spin Med.
