    Braid Issues for SPs

    Hi All
I have been using Berkley Fireline with 4lb, 6lb and 10lb sizes for soft plastics.
I have noticed lines fraying like little hairs along the line after some time, not from running around structore as I only fish open water.
I do tend to get some tangles as well that seem to suddenly burst off the reel.
Just wondering if any others have these issues, and please advise me what Braid you use in these fine sizes. I am looking to make a change to a better braid.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Fireline frays alot, just cut off the fireline you have been using (maybe first 50metres) then get a new spool and it will be fine. It lasts probably 6trips without fraying I have noticed so I am going to upgrade to a better one aswell but the Cystal Fireline is the best IMO. If you're getting those tangles it's probably because you have overspooled your reel. Take some line off and try it. Try Fins braid it's better than Fireline I have heard.

i personaly think bionic and dyneema tounament braid are the best braids.
the dyneema has a round profile so it sits better in the spool but it is very expensive,

Fire line looses its fused coating over time and that is what causes the fraying or fluffiness. It still works fine. I replace mine every 6 months to a year depending on usage. I like Fireline but am starting to switch to Sunline Super PE. Sunline is great and i have had no problems with it. It is well worth having a look at. Fins is fine as well but i usually use it in the higher breaking strains. Like tailorboi said your tangles are most likely from an over filled spool. If your reel is older and not suited to braid this may cause them as well due to poor line lay. They are also caused by casting technique. Try to cast as smoothly as poss. Start your cast slow then power up through the cast.

Are you using a quality reel??
I use 6 pound and 10 pound fireline and have had no probs.

Yes using a quality reel, thanks for replies, seems common for Fireline to fray a bit by the sounds of it. I will just snip the end off or turn the line around on the spool. Its never caused me to lose an fish. I use Fins on my heavy barra gear and its sweet, may look at their fine lines.

    Re: Braid Issues for SPs

I just went from fireline to sunline and imo my cast are more accurate and longer cast with the wind.
I dont know what tackle store you use but all round angler will show the difference between the two if you ask.
The spool of sunline was roughly 13 bucks more than the fireline.

I'm a little busy at the moment but we will definately catch up soon.

    Re: Braid Issues for SPs

i have used fins for ages and its a good braid , i just respooled 2 rods with stren (20lb and 3lb) and it seems to be doing a good job . casting lighter lures can cause knots aswell because it goes back onto the spool loose , one way to slow that down is do a big cast and wind it in quickly to get it tight on the spool again ever few casts .

    cheers nico

    Re: Braid Issues for SPs

    Hey
yeah I have been using fireline as well of about the same breaking strain and I have not noticed fraying but have been getting knots in the line which I believe is from winding in the slack line while using sp's and it becoming twisted as it goes on, I switched to shimano technium in a 4lb 6lb and 10lb for various reels and since then I have not experienced that problem.... and the technium is cheaper, however if you really fancy your braid fins is the go I’ve held some good barra on it and being put in amongst some structure and so far no fraying...
btw has anyone got any suggestions on how I should spool up reels, I’ve heard something about if it goes onto the reel clockwise its got to come off the new spool of line anticlockwise is this true?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks and good luck

    Re: Braid Issues for SPs

I regularly (every 2-3 trips) let nearly all my line (I use fins BTW) out by trolling slowly with nothing on the end of the line. I let it troll for a minute or so, then reel it back on whilst still underway. I think this gets any twist out of the line and it definitely behaves itself much better after I do this.
