Hi ausfishers. Posted this here because i guess it applies to all types of fishing.
I've recently discovered that people actually berley to great affect. I've been tweaking my general berley recipe (oats, bread, tuna oil, pellets) and that's easy enough but I can't for the hell of me figure out how to control my trail or identify where it's drifting.
I included a diagram so it'd be easier to discuss. I'd like to provide a general scenario first and see what you guys think.
Say i'm at the shore (brown). The wind is blowing ENE at 10knots, and the wave direction is SE.
Location 1: The berley would continue to drift in a SE direction and just drift right of me. To hit the trail i'd have to cast to my right and end up dragging my lure across all the shallowish water in front of the main rock platforms.
Location 2: Pretty much the same thing, except the berley is drifting to my right, and if there are guys in Location 1 casting straight ahead they'll have more use of my trail then i will right?
Location 3: The trail is taken away by backwash but doesn't travel too far. mostly gets rammed along the southern rocks.
Location 4 and 5: Pretty much the same as 1 & 2 except reversed.
Is that correct? I'm hoping i'm wrong because it seems like berleying correctly is impossible unless you are in a boat. I know that's wrong because i've read about heaps of rock fishermen berleying.
Is it only ever possible to berley so the trail goes out straight ahead of you if you are facing the direction of the waves?

edit: I've heard of really strong winds altering currents, but if the wind isn't very strong then does it have any affect?
Do what I do. When i first get to a rock fishing platform, I throw some torn up bread into the water to see where the burley goes. This floats on the water and is a great sight indicator. It all depends on what you are targetting. IMO if you are not using burley off the rocks, then your chances of catching fish are minimised. If you are chasing pelagics, then burley is less important, but not out of the equasion. Most of the target species that respond well to burley off the rocks are......Trevally, bream, snapper, drummer, tailor, luderick, salmon, red morwong, sharks, rays, jewies...........and all the vermin species as well.
Wind and swell are not the only factors in determiming burley trails, underwater currents, and shoreline structure also interract to affect burley trails. each location is unique.....which i why I experiment when i get there.
I know this is probably not answering your direct question, but may help you understand why there is no direct answer to your question.
Indeed. Yep, I have tried the bread method by accident when i tossed some crust into the ocean
If i toss some bread in and it doesn't go the way I want it to then would it be more beneficial to just not berley?
I'll throw out a berley of bread first thing when i get there and then toss in my pellets. Will report back after the fishing trip
edit: Also, does anyone know of any resources which explain how water interacts with the shoreline? The various currents, affect of the wind, swell, etc
Method I use you need some old stocking and 20 - 30 meters of 5mm rope. Take all the old scraps; prawns, mussels, fish heads, squid, blood, guts, etc, grind them up with the old blender, mix in breadcrumbs (4 or 5 to one) - add some tuna oil and water to make tacky and a handful of sea salt (yes, salt!). Mix it all up thoroughly, then: Fill the end of a stocking with about a kilo of mix and cut heavy denier stocking leaving about 50cm of loose fabric (where you get or what you are already doing with ladies hosiery is your business). You should be able to make 4 of these per pair of stockings. ~~Then FREEZE for at least a day~~ When you head off fishing keep cool in the Eske until ready to use. Before using, twist the fabric around the neck of the burley and pass back through itself (for strength). Then twist and tie off creating a loop with the remaining fabric. Pass the rope through and tie off firmly. Secure end of rope and chuck burley mix into swim/fishing area - it will thaw slowly, releasing a constant trail for fish to follow -you will probably see some knocks on the rope and some larger fish may actually try to make off with your burley!! Hence securing firmly. NB, as fish attack the burley sack they will tear them (to pieces) releasing more and more food which in turn will excite the fish, attract more/bigger fish to feed even more actively - so don't tell the misses you'll bring them back! NB, as the bait is anchored you will not need to worry about tide direction, the fish will find you! In strong currents, add rocks! NB, Fish associate salt with fresh blood (apparently) – hey, just the messenger. Good luck
Hi guys, sorry about the confusion but i'm not asking about berley recipes (although that one was sweet!). I'm confused as to how you guys would dispense your berley in those spots, and how you'd expect the trail to look like.
