Whiting / bream / tailor beach rod

Heading to straddie for a week next month and want to get a new beach rod thats light enough for whiting but also have enough balls to handle an average tailor.

I have a heavy tailor rod with an alvey that gets a bit much after hours of casting and isn't really much fun when the whiting, dart and bream are all thats about.

I also want to get a new spin reel to suit, that i will load with mono, which will double as a slug chucking reel for pelagics.

I want to keep the whole set up under $300 and was thinking of one of the live fibres and one of the average quality okuma's or penn's.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi plaztix,

You wont go wrong with a live fibre rod. They are a great rod. I would go an RLF37/2. 12' 6kg rod. Perfect for what your chasing. It is 2 piece though depending on what you prefer. Penns are good but the retrieve speeds are a bit slow and they weigh a bit. I have noticed a few guys on here are keen on Okuma V System but they will blow your budget. They have a couple of other options with good retrieve rates you could look at. I have a Penn Spinfisher but haven't owned an Okuma.

Thanks Scott, 2 piece is good, i will check that one out. What size spinfisher do you think would suit?

Nice rod Ben, would love one and might still consider it and just use my 3000 sol, or my old abu spinner for the moment until i can get another reel.

I would put a 650 Spinfisher on it or preferably a 560 Slammer. A 460 Slammer may not balance well. I also like the sound of a 10' 6" Nitro with a 3000 Sol. Would be nice and light and great fun with a half decent Tailor.

this thread has been done a few times so i will keep it short.

I have a gary howard ppg surf medium white tip. Can handle big stuff like jewfish because it has some serous power low down. But its white tip is made from fibreglass and allows you to cast light weights and catch small fish, i use it for all the fish you mentioned, and off the rocks aswell. They are high quality rods and will last a long time, my granddad has had one for a long time, and he uses it very fequently. they are 13'6 but very light.

You could also try a Wilson Shoreline, available in one or two piece, high or low mount. Its a glass rod, but IMO one of the most versatile light beach rods ever made. I have caught plenty of medium sized bream, tailor, whiting, flathead off the beach with it...and had some almighty tussles with rays, small sharks and other vermin....and couldnt fault it. Match it with a 3500 or 4000 series reel, or a 5" alvey if you go the low mount. Should keep you under budget. I wont get into the reel debate, any of the Daiwa/shimano reels at that size and over $100 shouls serve you well (cant bring myself to recommend okuma.....all my dealings with them have been negative).

Hi Plaztix, have a look at a WILSON 4144 a great light -medium surf rod at a reasonable price, i have caught everything on mine from whiting to 8kg snubbys. cheers wayne.

Ending up getting a 10' 6" live fibre and will just put an old egg beater i've got on it for the moment. It had braid on it so stripped it and want to spool it with mono.

What B/S should i go for? i was thinking 12lb would cover whiting, dart, bream and choppers.

12lb would be fine. If you go much lighter you might be under gunned for the choppers or hopefully greenbacks. You could go lighter if mainly chasing whiting, dart and bream. I have used Platypus Platinum 12lb for the past few years and it is great. Plenty of others to choose from but i prefer Platypus because of quality, price and its an Aussie company.

Mate like was said before, the 4144 is a very good light surf blank..i have one and love it.

thats the graph composite version of the shoreline. Great choice. 6kg is a good allround choice of line, and you cant go wrong with Platypus lines, Platinum is a great line, but i prefer the Pre Test as its a bit more supple, though not as thin as the Platinum. Go with the Aussie made.....we do lead the world in Mono lines.
