no its not worth paying $875 ..... When you can get as nice a reel for $589 (spend $100 more for a machined handle) or $449
I just noticed that the Exist is at $1049 now .......... very hard to justify that price over a Certate , Luvias or Fireblood or even a $875 Stella

    Chris

the price is getting quite high now for the top end reels, i paid 250 less then what they are today for my stella and that wasnt too long ago.

Unbelievable how much prices have jumped & its certainly is amplified at the top end ...... I'm so glad I bought most of my high end reels over the last 18months.
$1050 for a little Daiwa bream/bass reel would be hard to justify the spend

Definitely, if they leave the reels at these prices, the sale of them would have to dramatically decrease (in the smaller sizes anyway).

    Re: Threadline opinions

    Hi Guys,

Just want to weigh in my 5 cents worth.. Not to brag but i own a few stellas, an exist a new luvias, a sustain, a certate and a few stradics... so i reckon i can offer my opinion here with some authenticity...

Is a stella worth it??... of course it is. It is a supreme reel that performs a job better than the rest of the shimanos. Is an exist worth it??? Without a doubt... it too is a superb piece of kit that gives the user a better experience. After 2 years of use i still cant decide which one i like better than the other from a user perspective. Just for reference both reels have had to have new bearings inserted due to wear and tear... No reel is exempt from aging...

In saying that, the mid range reels in daiwa stable are far superior than my shimanos IMO. I love my 2000 certate and 2004 luvias. They are my day in day out workhorses and are handling the workload very well. The daiwas are smoother out of the box and if looked after wear very well. The sustains and stradics have died in the arse.

It is a little naieve to suggest that reels made of composite materials are less durable than metal. In the 2000 sized reel class the pressures exerted on reels are not that great anyway. If the new age material saves me some additional weight then my user experience is enhanced by fishing with light sensitive equipment. If you reckon an extra 30 grams has no impact on feel on a light bream outfit i'm curious to know how light your presentations are??? With that statement i tend to disagree.

The whole onus of flicking lures is to keep things as light as possible...that means light lines, light jigheads, light leaders, light rods and light reels... Go as small as possible in your reels...its surprising how much hurt you can put on a fish with modern 1000/2000 size reels. 2500's for 2-4kg rods IMO is over the top and unneccessary.

Good read there Kev ........ Nice to hear an unbiased opinion from an owner of most of the high & mid range reels!
I couldn't agree more about the smaller sized reels for typical bream & bass fishing - I for one would not go beyond a 1500/2000 size reel again - its just a better way of fishing plastics & tiny HBs

    Re: Threadline opinions

Couldnt agree more... Admittedy i used to use a 2500 stella FA... but the old stellas were much smaller than the new FD.. actually the same size as the 2000 certate... and its perfect for light 4lb and 6lb work...

I made the mistake of buying the 2500FD over the net without looking at it in person thinking the size would have been the same as the 2500FA...spewin. But it is s a great reel for bigger lures for XOS flathead and mid sized kings and jew...

Pete , I wouldn't be too bothered about the composites that are used in the Luvias ....... you'll probably find that the Zaion would be as strong & less likely to warp ......... welcome to the space age
I used one for a day about 6 months ago ........ & I was really impressed ( as nice to use as my Certate) ...... lighter than both my stella & Certate.

Back up the trolley, I have done a bit more research and have come around to getting a Luvias. Found one on the net for $359 AUD, and was thinking the 2000 size rather than the 1003 for the following reasons:
    • 4kg of drag & only 2kg in the 1003
    • Twice the line capacity as the 1003
    • slightly faster retreive in the 2000
    • one extra ball bearing in the 2000
    • Only 30 grams heavier at 200 gms
    • Still balance nicely on a 2-4kg rod
    • Same price as the 1003
    • Able to deal with larger than expected by-catch
    Any thoughts on this choice.....?

    Thanks

    Peter

Well thought out Pete ........ In the end its what you want to target & what rod you want to put it on ( I always try a reel on the rod that it will be used on)

    you wont be disappointed

    Pete,

Sounds like your pretty much spot on. Your thought process was exactly mine at the time i purchased too. But i went the 2004 rather than the 2000... the 2004 is the shallow spool version...but mine is specifically for bream...any unexpected ring-ins are not catered for..

The $$$ seems good too... best of luck...as NAGG said, you wont be disappointed.

I own 2 luvius 2004s and can not say a bad word about them they have a great drag and run very smooth. I rate them up there with reels alot more expensive from the daiwa stable. I dont think you will be disappointed with it at that price.

    Re: Threadline opinions

Well it was a dilema whether to get the Luvias 2000 or 1003, so what else was a self confessed tackle junkie to do but get one of each. Probably won't see them at that price again, and it's a great excuse to get another rod....

Thanks to all for steering me in the right direction.

    Peter
