    Hinze produces!

With my holidays quickly running out, I decided to hit Hinze Dam for an early morning mission...Along for the ride was a (for the time being) mystery guest. We hit the water just before 4am and headed towards our starting point. Approx 30 minutes later, we had arrived started flicking at the bankside submerged grass.

I was using a Water Mocason, while my mystery partner in crime went ol' school with a Tiny Torpedo. The first 20 minutes or so produced squat, and I began thinking that Hinze would let us down again. But then came a few hit and misses, and things were looking up.

The first fish for the day came in soon after. 41cm of surface Bass is a great way to open the account. I managed a few more, all in the high 30s to the low 40s, but my fishing buddy for the day still remained fishless.

    Then it happened...

The cast was fired out...a perfect landing right on the edge of the grassy bank along side a bit of submerged timber. The torpedo was being worked like a professional, and with its operator not having too much surface experience, it was great to see.

About 1 metre out from the bank there was a massive boil behind the lure. "Wait...wait...wait...wait" I explained, let it sit for a while, then give a few short twitches. The directions were followed to the letter and as if planned, the Bass came back and found the hooks.

My mystery guest leant back on the rod, setting the hooks and getting ready for the battle that ensued. Drag was peeling from the reel as this was obviously a good size fish. A few big runs were taken, but sure enough my fishing buddy had the fish beside the boat, and then into the net. The catch is official! Big smiles were had all round, and we even shared a celebratory hug.

Well after all...its not everyday that your 7yo daughter (Mikala) scores her first EVER surface Bass! To make things even better it came in at over 42cm long! Needless to say we were both happy fishos. Unfortunately I forgot the towel that we wet for Kala to hold the fish, so she wasn't to keen on holding it for a pic. (Still a bit weary of the spikes!!!!)

Kala was happy with that and didnt do much more fishing after that, but did manage another couple of smaller models on a chubby.

All up we scored 13 Bass for the morning, with all but 2 coming off the surface. What a great way to spend the day! The only downside is we are both currently walking around like zombies.

There were 6 fish over 40cm, with only the two rats being undersize...the rest were high 30s'...I love days like these.

I am absolutely thrilled that Kala got her first surface Bass...and she hasn't stopped talking about it since it happened. Today was one of those days where its simply pure gold! Another great moment in my daughters life, that I was fortunate enough to share with her.

Do you reakon that carton of milk had started to curdle by the time the day was over? Nothing beats putting a newbie onto fish, match it with some surface action and a good tally and it makes a magic day.

Well done Leigh and nothing puts a smile on your face like putitng your kids onto a good fish. They certainly are special moments to share together. Good to hear some positive news coming out of Hinze. I havent been out there for some time but I am keen for some of that earlying morning surface action, just have to get the outboard off the boat again. Great report and photos. cheers Richard

The milk was for our cornflakes we had earlier on in the morning! Once the milk was gone I was using the carton for an ashtray.

    Re: Hinze produces!

A little off topic. But I was thinking of hitting Hinze this weekend until I read something about taking the outboard off. Last time I went there (probably more than a year ago) it was electric only, but you could leave an outboard on.

Have thing changed? and if so, where can I find a current list of the boating regulations on SEQ impoundments? I don't think Sweetwater has them all up to date (I could be wrong)

Nice fish by the way and there is nothing better than putting kids and novices on to fish.

    Thanks for the comments guy!

Josh...You have never been allowed to leave an outboard on at Hinze Dam, whether you are using it or not. Hinze is an electric only impoundment and all outboards must be removed.

    Re: Hinze produces!

a few weeks back i was out on the dam and some moron flew past me with his big 75hp motor i tried to call him over but the noise the motor was putting out he couldn't here me. there should be a big sign at the ramp telling everyone that petrol motors are not allowed.
