Also the way they slaughtered the poor things - Dreadful!

Hi all, just heard on the radio the following report.
__________________________________________________ _______________
The West Australian government is considering tougher penalties in a bid to curb illegal and black market fishing.
This comes after numerous sharks were discovered with their fins cut off in the area near 80 Mile Beach, south of Broome, in March last year, a Department of Fisheries investigation found.
Charges have been laid against at least one person and will be heard in the Broome Magistrates Court next month.
"The harvesting of big numbers of sharks is a cause for concern and the photographic evidence I have seen relating to the alleged slaughter is disturbing," Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said.
"The government is assessing work done by a committee established by the previous fisheries minister which reviewed the (Fisheries Resource Management Act) FRMA.
"The committee's report recommends that consideration be given to implementing harsher penalties under the Act.
"The government is predisposed to implementing tougher penalties for criminal activities, including illegal fishing and black market operations."
The Department of Fisheries has declined to comment.

What do you think of these idiotic people. Who could do such a thing? I am glad they're being prosecuted to be honest, they killed the sharks for their fins? Pfft I'll kill them for the sharks . Please reply on what you think about these ludacris people.

It's the yellow army taking their fins for soups and 'medicinal products'.
It's a disgusting act but the lenient penalties handed out for when they're caught in our waters means they'll be back soon enough.
Happens all over Aus and the world, it will just keep happening until oneday there are no more sharks to hunt, then what? whats gonna happen when the apex predator is diminshing from our oceans, the whole balance is gonna go out of wack and fall apart or atleast there will be major changes. Harsher penalties and more officers need to be enforced!

See if you can find information on what south africa used to do to protect their fish stocks. It worked so well that some species like tailor are back in plague proportions. If we followed down their path within a few short years we would have fish, shark and whale numbers back upto very healthy levels. Would be much better fishing for us
only a sick person would cut the fins off a shark and leave it to die a slow death by drowning
Jeremy
I have seen footage of asian shark-fishing boats, the fins & tail are hacked off, & the sharks just pushed back over the side, still flapping.
I believe everything deserves a decent death if nothing else,
made me sick to the stomach the way it was done.

Yeah it's absolutely callous! Mind you, our netting and drumlines are not much better - not to mention the perilous end all the other creatures meet. I've had a few of my tagged noahs die at the hands of these methods...one of them a good sized tiger. All that hard work and dedication and a year or two later they're killed needlessly. But yeah, the finning is in a realm all of its own. Bladeca makes a great point, and i too think it's about time we learnt from the Sth Africans' example. Enforcement needs to be stepped up in a MAJOR way! Keep up the great attitude Tailorboi...young bucks like yourself are the future of our oceans, so power to ya fella!

What are Drumlines? I've heard about them at Straddie. I've been watching a few documentaries on the shark fins and they've been killing great whites - around 500 per ship unloading
Tom
They're baited hooks attached to a drum or a similar floatation device and are set as part of the shark control program. basically, they're a trap for any noahs in the vicinity of the popular beaches. There are quite a few set along amity at straddie...they mostly catch whalers there. they're right up and down the coast, in addition to some nets. I love how people crucify sharko's for setting one or two baits off a beach claiming that by doing so they're burleying up the waters around the area, when in the same breath they feel safer if there's 16 drums each with a bait attached just out from that very beach! The fishos' bait is an attractant, but the government's is a deterrant! Figure that logic out!

Thanks Cuzza, what hooks do they use on those things and are they checked regularly. I saw 1 guy in a boat just pulling them up without any luck thankfully. I heard his greatest catch is a big White Pointer . It's sad how they are killed as they serve as much goodness to the enviroment than a big Barra. Laws need to be enforced quickly, it's us that are stepping into the sharks habitat!
