furuno thru hull 600w or 1kw

hey all will be fitting up my new boat soon and cant decided or bring my self to spend over a $1000 on a 1kw transducer unless it was definally worth it have never seen one in use , will i get much more benefit that a 600w is it worth all the extra money?

If serious bottom fishing over 200m is your go 1kw is vital I use 1kw transom job on a585 and we can mark blue eye and bass in 600m whilst drifting. clutter is a drama underway on 50 khz but can be minimised with a through hull installation (but may cause problems on a trailerboat)If your fishing under 200m save your money and buy a sexy rod and reel as your looking at 1000-1200 bucks

Keep in mind that one day you might fish in deep water, and 1kwt can be used in shallow water, wider view of the bottom, we all started in shallow water. It might hurt now the cost, but down the track you might be glad you done it.

Skipalong I like your boat, can you give me a bit of info on it, that looks like something I would like. I fish of the shelf in a boat half the size of that

I went to a 1kw IN HULL wet box transducer for my Raymarine C70... so far I am VERY happy with it and we don't have any deep water around Darwin...

I was lucky enough to get 1 from the USA for around $550 aus.... not sure what they are worth now but??

A 1kw transducer is not just for deep water
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got your attention? It really drives me nuts that every time this question is asked we get the , there fantastic if your going to fish deep replys! Yes they are fantastic if your going to fish deep water , and i love marking solid shows on the bottom in 600m but they are soooooooo much more than a deep water transducer!

What your basically comparing is a p66 ( eg falcon) verses a m260 eg ( m3 bmw) there is just no comparring the two! The p66 is a $150 dollar transducer and works fine on a $1000 unit but you have already spent the big bucks on the sounder why not let it perform like it should with a great transducer!

Airmar even state that the m260 is 13 times more sensitive than the p66 in 200khz and a MASSIVE 50 more sensitive in 50khz This is the advantage of the 1kw transducer it's much much more able to tell you what at your little ledge in 60m that the p66 600watt transducer , the detail the p66 is going to supply while good is just second rate compared to the very sensitive m260. This is why you go with the expensive transducer , it just happens to also have the benifit of being able to shoot deep!

    Skipalong.

I have got the Furuno 585 with the 1kw hanging off the transom. The brother in law has the 620 with the 600 watt hanging off the transom. We do plenty of fishing where we take both (or more) boats.

Up here in Darwin the water is not that deep. Most of the fishing we do is in less than 20m and only up to about 50m over at the islands.

I can say from being tied up next to him and looking at both sounders side by side, there is simply no comparison in the quality of the readings and picture from the 1kw, it leaves the 600w for dead. This is with both units tuned as well as the environment allows. But in the end, you have to place a value on whether the picture is about $700 better than the 600w and I can say that for me it is, but for him it is'nt and he is perfectly happy with the results he gets for his money and is'nt considering upgrading.

    I hope this helps

True but if you think that 1200 bucks is going to make that much difference in 60-100 m your pullin yourself, I have both 600 & 1kw on my rig & sub 150-200m the advantages do not justify the cost, most of (90%) of my bottom fishing is 450m plus and a lot 600m plus,I also run a low freq 2kw koden so I have a clue... dont waste ya money mate.

    Hey siegfried

I hardly do any deep bottom bashing, most of my fishing is trolling for billy's and the differance the 1kw makes is huge!!! To start with i can use the 50mhz( much wider beam) this in it;s self is worth every penny as how many 600w p66 can you use the 50khz on even when stopped let alone at wot. I to have plugged in the 600w transducer and swapped cables to the 1kw and i can assure you that for me 1200 bucks for that bang is money very well spent, even if i am pulling myself!

thanks for replys guys still a little confused, most of my fishing will between 20m - 130m i troll a huge amount and bottom fish the rest of the time in winter.

i have a 600w now and found that i am not able to use the 50hz will i ever be able to even in deep water or is that where the 1kw comes into play?

    cheers justin

All I know is that Finding Time isn't the only one who's had a quiet pull over the sounder in his cat - it is that good and that much better than standard. If I could afford it I would go the larger one.

Re: furuno thru hull 600w or 1kw

    Hi Justin,

I went through the same thing not long ago and researched it pretty hard. It cant be denied that the 1kw will be a better option but how much better is it for the cost is a debate in itself. As Ian stated it will be a lot more senstive and give better detail even in shallow water. As far as running the 1kw in 50hz to give a wider beam meaning covering more ground well I dont think its that much of an advantage because I believe the beam of the 1kw ducer in 50hz isnt that much wider in camparison to the beam of a 600w ducer in 200hz (I cant be certain about this and havent got the time to research right now. I'm sure Ian can correct me on that one if I'm wrong)

    I went 600w for a few reasons..

have been happy with my results using 600w previously
    cost
I couldnt use a 1kw through hull tranducer in an alloy boat because it was only Stainless or brass which causes severe corrison.

I'm stoked with the results of a 600w plastic through hull in the new Riptide and it does everything I want it to do.. It reads great at speed and more importantly I can leave the gain up while travelling at speed which gives me great detail of the bottom and any fish which is very important. I can see live bottom and fish very clearly so Im more then happy with the results of whats on screen and also whats the in esky.

Ring Jim Carlson at Trymax marine and ask his opinion on the matter because I will be certain he will say go the 600w. Either way get his advice on the matter as they have been doing it for a long time now.

Yes the 1kw would be the best option but is it required for your purpose is something you need to decide.

    Regards,
    Greg

In regards to your question you have probally found that using 50hz just results in a screen of complete interference and this gets worse the deeper you go. In most cases depedning on the boat and ducer set up you need to almost stop the boat or go very slow to get a half decent reading. This is where the 1kw comes in handy because its got the power and sensitivity to shoot so strong in 50hz and give very little interference.

I was out in 130mtrs off 1770 recently and travelling at 25 knots in 200hz and I was picking up fish and live bottom beautifully..

    Cheers Greg

Re: furuno thru hull 600w or 1kw

    Hi Skipalong,

We went with the 600W transducer when we fitted up our 585 and have been very impressed with the bottom readings it gives us. The reason we went with it was firstly the price(big difference) and cause we weren't going to be fishing off the shelf and also some great testimonials from people that had the 600W. Overall gives us great readings at speed and have been extremely happy with it. Ian has said above that the 1Kw is awesome - I would have to agree the more power the better.

I would have gone with the 1Kw if the budget allowed.

    Regards,
    Craig.
