    Re: 406 EPIRB stock problem

I think because of the shortage some stores will tend to over order.
I am betting the basic models will be back under $400 in a few months, which is when I will get one, can't afford one now anyway with rates and elec bills and xmas hangover all hapenning at once.

In the mean time I will stay within the limits, I had to do a quick safety check prior to last weekend heading to Burrum Heads.
Luckily 8 mile reef is about 2 miles South of the limit, my flares were only good until the end of this month and sure enough the water police front up and check everything while I was sitting out there.

    Re: 406 EPIRB stock problem

My mate let his 121 run out of date thinking he could get away with it until feb 1st and buy a 406. He got picked up by the water police last Sat and fined $160. He was told to go back inside the limits (2 nm) and the next fine would be more. He went to buy his 406 and was told there is a waiting list of 5 months( IN WA ). So now he is unable to go out any further than 2nm and the 406 has now cost another $160( dont have too much sympathy as he new about this for a while). Is it possible for him to borrow one or does the rego to the owner prevent this?

There was some talk about boaties 'sharing' epirbs between boats to cut cost. But I believe this was cleared up by the Regulating Authority. As the EPIRB is registered to the boat it cannot be done legally.

There is firms renting them and I believe you can use them on more than one vessel.Just list it on the paperwork and as long as the contact details are correct that is the most important thing so they know who is out there and on what boat.

Can you point to the topic where it says you can't as I had not heard that and a quick look at amsa site and I couldn't find it??

When you think about it there is a hell of a lot of personal ones be they bush=walking or atached to life jackets

5 months wait - surely can't be serious!!!

Edit - thanks for the article Malcolm

i rang whitworths yd about the GME 406 and they said 3-4 months waiting period and that suppliers are about 13,000 units short of demand.
rang BIAS boating at tingalpa and they said that they had 10 in stock.
price in the cattledog said $439, bloke on the phone said $519.
good old supply and demand. cheers

    Re: 406 EPIRB stock problem

Got mine (MT400) at W/worths yesterday at catalogue price. Pre-paid for it up front at order time 2 weeks ago, jumped the queue of "deposits paid" and "waiting for stock" and received it in within the 2 weeks (apparently I was number 16 on the waiting list of pre-paids) - they give priority to fully pre-paid. They mentioned they would not be putting up the price for now, but had many thousand on back order

    Cheers

    G'day

Surely they'd have to match/honor the printed price?

You would think so, but they could increase the price under supply and demand, which they did. If you were the supplier, you'd be doing the same thing, simple business, not nice but that is business

I cannot see anyting in all the whinging, the facts are:

Everyone knew it was going to happen
Everyone knew the date it was going to happen
It was well communicated to all through every type of media
If you weren't ready, whose fault is it, not the supplier!!!!

So at the end of the day, if you weren't prepared for the change, tough titties!!!!

You get to play in the shallow end of the pool for a while and with the current demand, I don't see the price dropping for at least 18 months...

This should confuse even more. This is the response from my mate who got caught without a valid eperb. Cut and copy of his email.

I have spoken to the maritime safety authority about being able to use some one else’s epirb, they said that as long as you have given the owner of the epirb your boat details (how big so they know what they are looking for), how many people on board and basically where you will be fishing you will be able to go out with someone else’s epirb. You cannot go out with two boats and the one epirb between you.

Stones Cnr Marine had a sign outside yesterday saying they had EPIRBs in stock, no mention of brand.

I think the other key point is the contact details as they must be valid and avaliable so I would add the secondary details as thet is the rescuers first point of contact.
