Extend to end of Jan is fair enough but after that, the existing will be turned off so there will be no coverage. Unless they delay turning it off which I doubt as they have been telling us about the change for at least 2 years.

Beyond Jan, you will be therefore be going out without your last line of defence/safety. Would you really want to anyway, law or not?

Sorry but if you have left it too late after 2yrs of notice, then I fail to see how that should become someone elses problem to solve (ie extend deadline, provide exemptions, find additional epirb stock fast etc).

I assume that people realise that although it is a 406MHz EPIRB it still has a 121.5MHz capability. This is used for tracking particularly when the search vessels have an RDF.

121.5 is being used only as a homing signal, for search and rescue, quite correct

    1. There is quite some difference between the old 121.5 Epirb and the 121.5 homing signal built into the 406 Epirb.

    2. The two certainly should not be confused

    3. The 121.5 system will certainly be dead come Feb 1 and not before time either.

    4. As for 2 years notice? More like 10 years would be closer.

thanks treublue, you are right and my oversight... the satellite will not pick up the 121, however aircraft will be honing in on it from a ground perspective..
