    Question 406 EPIRB stock problem

Does anybody know of any store in Australia that have the Pains Wessex RB6 406mhz EPIRB in stock?

I have tried Whitworths, BCF and a few independent stores and they have all sold out! Seems to be that way everywhere, should have got in earlier.

    Cheers

    Got the epirb woot

I got mine, just before Xmas, from Marine Safe in Brisbane, 07 3808 1988. Don't know if they have any now.

yeah, I don't think many places would have them atm, what with the high demand because everyone seemed to have left it til the last minute (myself included).

Try some inconspicuous places, like dive and navigation centres. Even here in Townsville they kept the fact that they had them quiet so that their regular customers (frequent divers) would be able to get them when they needed one. Some may have a few left.

Mum and Dad have been in Wollongong for the last 2 weeks and have been visiting every boat dealer, whitworths chandlery shop they could find, still didn't find one. I don't know how long or if the 406Mhz Epirbs are required in NSW, but it appears that Qld demand has had an impact on the availability in NSW too.

Until then, we just don't have any choice and will have to stay inshore. I reckon once they get more stock and more an more people finally get their's demand will finally subside and we might see a few better prices around. Another 4-6 months and they'll be down around $300 I reckon.....well I hope so anyway.

The supply problems are only going to get worse as the other States are forced to switch over on the First of February. Queensland was just the tip of the iceberg. If you cant get one by changeover date, then i think you'll either be waiting awhile or paying through the nose.

What other states? - most changed over and had an official daye either months or a long time ago. Commercial operators in other states and yact racers have changed over several years ago.

The only way you'll get one is to do what everyone else is doing "put your name on the list and wait". I'll be thinking of you while I am at the reef, had my 406 since July last year "early bird"

Try Spinnakker Sound Chandlery (07)54 976007 or 0423 963 804 at Bribie Island. Got mine for $380 cash last October. Cheers, Darren.

    Re: 406 EPIRB stock problem

Thanks for the suggestions and pm's guys.

I phoned all of them and found 2 shops that had the GME EPIRB in stock but I am after the Pains Wessex due to their free battery replacement after 5 years (GME $150) and also I have had alot of trouble with GME radios so I do not trust their products.

I also had 2 shops tell me that due to their being no stock that there has been a waiver put into place in QLD until end of Jan and will likely be extended further.

I searched the internet and the MSQ site and could find nothing about it so I am going to give water police a call in the morning to find out if this is correct.

    Cheers.

Even Challange Marine in Perth/Balcatta? I bought my Pains Wessex one there recently specifically due to the 10yr battery warranty.

    Re: 406 EPIRB stock problem

NSW and some others were last year June , Sep and Nov as that is the time it was legislated. Enforcement didn't start till later in some cases.

If push came to shove legally they may not be enforcing it but if there is a death or injury I wouldn't want to be the skipper who did't have the gear.

The authorities and manufacturers were caught out by the legislaters leaving it so late they couldn't provide advertising and stock to fill the last minute demand it seems. Pretty pathetic effort.

And to make things worse in 5 -6 years time when due if you think the manufacturers aren't going to milk it????? on battery replacements.

Just a quessie about the pains wesex- does service include shippig as the old ones had to be listed as special cargo due to battery type and transport courier either way was $30 locally let alone interstate!!! GME are now standard shipping / mail as the battery type has been changed on new models.

Owner pays for shipping but at least with Pains Wessex the battery and labour is free.
