g'day guys. i've decided to set myself up a bit better for anchoring in deeper water and give an anchor retriever float a go. which are the better ones to go with and what size/weight of anchors/chain will they haul up? will they haul up a sand anchor or a plough or are they only really for reef anchors?
i did a bit of a search and found good arguments for either the simple ring type or the one way clip type. does anyone recommend the anka yanka?
Paddles, I anchor in 30m + depth to dive and find the clip on one great(sometimes my deckies are not smart enough to work out which way it slides). You need a float of at least 350mm round to lift a danforth and 6m of chain. I have 100m of rope out in this depth clip the retriever on, motor in the opposite direction at 10-12 knots, the float will go under and travel down to the D shackle at the chain. Once the anchor floats to the surface turn around and retrieve. Some say the clip on device unravles the weave of the rope, but I have not found this yet and have been using mine for 3 years. The trick seems to be to stretch the sping a bit so that its not so tight on the rope.

Hi Bill, Not having used the ring type, what holds the anchor at the surface. Does the chain and d shackle simply slide through the ring and the weight of the chain hold the anchor at the surface?. Thanks mal.
they work great just remember dont pull from rear

Yes mate, the rope and chain simply slid through the ring, up the "shank" of the anchor and that's where it stays with the chain hanging down, rope floating on top.
Easy as, better than pulling the things up by hand in any more than 20 odd metres of water.

The SS split ring type is the pick of them.
You can choose to add it to the anchor warp or not without having to feed the warp thru first.
Have a spring clip one that I dont use any more because
1 deckies cannot understand which way to fit them on and
2 mine did untwist the warp even tho the spring was stretched
Dont like the anchor yanckor as the clip could come loose I feel
Capt and I used an old split ring one I bought way back in the last century and got a manufacturer to spit out some more so if you can splice some 12 mm silver onto a ball or a 20 lt heavy duty acid drum and splice a loop at the other end you can make your own for not much $.
I think Capt has still got a few left.

The plain ring ones are the simplest and the best. I had one that clipped onto the rope but what I found was when it got stuck once and the buoy went below the surface, I began a widecircle direction and caught the rope on the prop. That cut the rope and it sank to the depth of the buoy which I would guess could be 15 metres down. GONESKY. OUCH that was expensive. I would have at least got the buoy back if it was a ring type.

K I S S keep it simple stupid. I have used the round ring for years with no hassels no moving parts nothing to stuff up.
just make shure the dekkie throws the ball after the anchor and chain have dissapeared some times the ring gets snagged on the anchor if u throw it all at the same time.

Yes exactly Mal . I used a non reverse clip for years and it never unravelled the rope but it was always a bit of a pain to clip on. Now use a 100mm ring and it is a lot easier...just that you cant remove it from the rope ...but I dont want to. Never used it on a reef anchor....only on plough and sand anchors. They both work
you guys are great, thank you all. i'll give the simple ring type a go first then and if i have problems i'll try the one way type. from what you guys are saying i think i'll try and get minimum 300mm ball as i have a 15lb plough with about 4m of chain for the sand/mud bottoms and a lighter reef anchor with a heavier chain for the reef bottoms.
I find throwing the anchor a lot easer than throwing the dick that has just ratteled the chain down the side of my newly painted boat!
I have been using the Anka Yanka type,and have had no trouble with it.

i use a 100mm stainless ring attaches to a orange 450mm bouy works a treat
