Off on hols to Fiji for ten days - I will be taking the rod (of course). I would love to have a go at some GTs etc. Can anyone suggest a good charter operator to contact. Not sure who does what and I don't just want to take the Hotels word for it.
unfortunetly you can't fish landbased at the shangrila, the easiest option would be to ask around at the rrsort, speak to the astaff and find out who else runs fishing charters
gday mullet i spent a month there building thier water treatment plant took a fly rod with me there were plenty of trevaly in the lagoon . they have surf skis and several charter boats although it was nearly 10 years ago. an easy walk to the other side of lagoon there is a river mouth that is suposed to fish well (got that from locals i worked with) there are many beaches close by if you hire a car that have large reefs in casting distance (use google maps satelite) i had limited time to fish since was working but ate meals by the water and witnessed plenty of activity. hope that helps. ps watch out for sea snakes on sand after dark
As of about 18 months ago when I was there last they had two resort charter boats for offshore fishing.
Part of the reason I went there was because they have they're own 36' Blackwatch.
That particular vessel was out of order at the time - not a resort 'line' either becaue I got on the grog with the caterpillar mech they'd flown out from oz to fix it.
They also have a 25 odd foot centre console tinny with twin game chairs in the rear.
Sounds a bit weird bit it works great - two on strike at the same time.
The tinny is also a lot cheaper than the other.
They have only basic equipment etc., but when the water depth is 1 km at only 500m off the shore, you don't need a real big boat.
As for chartering for a private session of gt popping - cash talks - the boys might sort out a session in between booked trips.
Yep, 10 years ago I went out in the centre console on my own with the local driver. On honeymoon and it was my 30th birthday. Wild weather outside. 2 to 3 metre swell with about 25 knots of southerly blowing. I think the local was surprised I had fronted at the ramp. We trolled the lagoon to start with and scored a keeper schooly mac. Then went outside for a while and dropped a nice spaniard at the boat and the driver was on the gaff. Classic Fijian comment "Yeah spanish. Big one". Made no difference to me as it was either going back or off to the locals, so I'd had my fun.
I was the one that pulled the pin at the end. This fella was happy to keep going, but we would have been outside for a few hours and I was starting to get a bit green. He did comment on the weather and I said "It's going to get worse?" He says "Very worse"
stayed there in may 08 the 2 charter boats where doing 2 trips a day..they where only trolling for dolphin fish, banito and mackeral although they did have the marlin flags up a few days...they where catchin between 3 -7 fish a trip ...they charged 15 bucks a head to cook the fish if you wanted to eat them and the rest went to the local tribe....cheers rosco
