    mud island 01 01 09

    hey all,

had a easy new years eve to be up at 330am to head out to mud for the first time with my mate mick for a soft plastics day no bait at all,, ,which was a first for me.
after watching the dvds and playin with the plastics in the pool, it was show time ,
got to the north side of mud around 5am and flicked around the shollows with no result. bugger must have missed something.
had a scout around in some deeper water and found some reef and set up for a drift , flicking away and mick is on small squire cool at least that is one fish in the boat , next im on small squire wahoo first fish on plastics ,,,,, , drifted off the reef drove around for another drift, small squire coming in the boat , then a big hit and a 39cm cod i was stoked, couple more drifts and more squire to 25 cm , then mick gets a bigger hit and lands a 34.5cm squire ,, then im on for another cod at 36cm,waves and wind picked up so we headed to the shollows and the eastern side and flicked around we laned some good bream to 28cm , the called it a day and headed back to the boat ramp at 10am.

good day and my first fish on plastics , sorry no pics and all fished released
hope everyones new years was as good as mine ,,,,

Good show old chap. First lesson learnt dont take any bait keep on perservering with the plastics & you will get it right, use light braid & quality gear & you will be amaised at what you will catch, Peter.

    congrats,

gotta agree the easiest way to catch fish on plastics is take no bait! good fun when something new works - makes it all the more worthwhile. well done.
fishing's as simple as 3 P's - patience, perserverance and PLASTIC!

Good first effort guys, the fact you were getting undersize squire means you were doing something right. Keep at it and sooner or later you'll get some bigger models. Once you get a few on plastics, you'll never go back to bait.

thanks. been back in the pool working on my technique, cant wait to get out again and fish the places that have produced good fish on bait for me in the past , and work the plastics over them

You've got the right approach mooky, the results speak for themselves, that cod is a good fish.

Don't know if working my SP in the pool will help my second ( deadstick) rod though, unless I tie it to the pool fence and see what happens..... I usually work 2 rods at Mud, one of them sits in the rod holder while I work the other - it's that simple. Good luck in "09.

good work mate , i hesitated useing SP's for ages , i would give them a go than put bait on , but than i did what you did and left the bait at home and between 2 of us landed about 30 fish for the day , they were mostly under size but it was enough to get me hooked on the softies . having a pool to test your technique is a big advantage . good luck on your next plastics trip and happy new year .

    cheers nico
