Cool Raymarine Ax0 and Maximum Sounder Depth

    Hi,

I am wanting to buy a new sounder for offshore fishing and need depth capability to fish the shelf off the gold coast, so I think I need up to around 300-400 Mtrs. I have looked at the Raymarine A50D (New Model) and it looks pretty good except that the specifications say it will only go to 600 Feet (182 Mtrs) with the 500W transducer. Does anyone have any practical experience with the Raymarine Ax0 series of what depth it will actualy read up to? The Furuno FCV-620 specs say it will read up to 800 Mtrs with a 600W transducer, just seems like a big difference to me, I am hoping Raymarine are just being conservative.

    G'day Bruce,

Most 600w sounders will show the top of the shelf / drop off, but only just.
They are struggling and are at their limit.
Seeing anything on the bottom is all but impossible - you are lucky to get a thin, broken bottom line.

If you are serious about wanting deep water performance - go to 1kw.

The best value for money in the 1kw sounders is the Furuno 585.
The prices have just changed and I am waiting for the new price list, but we should get one for around $2500 - $3000

Raymarine 1kw is excellent, but you will pay a lot more because you have to step up into a "C Series" This will set you back in excess of 5 grand and go up from there for the bigger screens.

The performance statistics given by the manufacturers should be taken with a grain of salt.
Their testing methods, as compared to real life usage are two completely different things.

What type of boat is it going in?

    Cheers

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

    Thanks for your reply.

As I thought I am on the limit of the lower cost models.

My fishing on the shelf will only be for pelagics so I am thinking that maybe I Can get away with the 600 watts of power, as long the water temp guage and my GPS are working ok.

The boat is a 28 foot centre console made of glass out of Korea (Not a brand you would be familiar with), has single Volvo Penta Diesel Duoprop. Currently has a thru hull transducer that is not doing the job (I think it is mounted in the wrong spot, however I Can not see anywhere esle to put it) and I was thinking about an transom mount transducer with the new unit mounted between the prop leg and the trim tab.
