eastern side of mud seem to be the best...its just a case of keep trying..look for bait on the sounder, fish the dropoffs ...try try try....if all else fails look for the other boats and fish near them...

    Bait or Plastics?
Most islands seem to fish under similiar circumstances so check this out for a start,

    Re: snapper help needed

Try using whole squid about 5" long or whiting heads that have been crushed under a boot.

My catchrate has improved an awful lot since i stopped anchoring and use a lecky to control the drifts.

Whiting make a great snapper bait...they stay on the hook well and the pickers dont knock them off.....use a 2 hook rig..one in the head and one in the tail...

    Re: snapper help needed

Mate, Ive been fishing only about 8 weeks properly, since getting a boat.
Ive caught 4 pinkies, and 3 x 2kg + snapper. I also lost an approx 5 kg one too (got it to the surface and it got off).

The snapper catches have only started happening in the last 6 outings. I hope to get a snapper each time I go out but Im not always successful.

I run 3 rods with a variety of bait on each, ie: pilchards, whiting, squid, garfish, lures. I caught the big ones using pilchard and whiting. I lost the BIG one on garfish. I have caught pinkies whilst fishing small bait for flatheads. Ive never got anything from squid, but I think Im the only one.

I use size 6 hooks (recently downgraded to size 5 and got one).
I using a 2 hook rig, slider and small ball sinker. Bugger all drag.

Ive caught all my snapper out from Carrum, at about 15m, bottom is grass beds.
I can give you gps coords if you like, but its easy to find. Go straight out from Seaford pier until you hit 15 m. Thats it.

Hope any of that helps, anyones care to let me know some further tips?

    Forget the pillies.
Get urself some rump steak. Stick a chunk on a gumatsu 5/o oct circle hook.
Set ur bait runner and wait for it to go off.
    Also try whiting head only.
    Dont forget lots burley
    Sound around nth end mud.

    Cheers

    Hi all

went out to mud today and there was heaps of boats out there everyone must be getting out there every good day as there are not many good calm days.

picked up a lot of under sized snapper to the north of mud moved round to the east and piked up a nice 50 to 60 cm sweetlip and a couple of bream. also hooked a heap of shovel nose shark which were as let go.

great weather out there and at least we got a feed.

cheers for all the advice pilcards and mullett was the bait used.

Try a black magic snapper snatcher - 4/0 hooks in bleeding pilchard.....put a little bit of squid or mullet on the end of each hook....put the glow bead under a torch....you will find if there are snaps there they will just take it.....
Just another option for you to try....
