Thread: auto or air diff lockers

Re: auto or air diff lockers

noboat, I used to do hard hills only using my rear locker and in 2wd. But... 80% of the time you can get your front wheels over a steep ledge or something and not be able to climb over. And then your day is over (in a standard 4by). But with your front locked you can pull yourself up and over. Dual lockers and a winch are a must for me. But for greatest gain front locker first...

But your right my truck used to always slip into gullys and almost tip. Heres a pic.

Air lockers rear first then front, but get an electric winch first and some decent recovery gear, so when the lockers get you in deep trouble {and you will with lockers} you can winch out.
Don't take my word for it, I've only been at it for 17 years.

Ps: you don't want to slide into a deep rut like below when your auto loker kicks in. You will take paint off your bar climbing out.

Noboat - just to clear a few things up.

They don't automatically lock - they automatically unlock to allow differential action which in your scenario is a very good thing.

If you switch a front air locker off and have one front wheel spinning then you must have one rear wheel spinning also which logically assumes that you are not going anywhere. At best you have one rear wheel driving with a rear locker in and still nil traction from the fronts at all.
If that is the desired effect (getting the ar$e around? The same effect can be achieved by taking the vehicle out of 4wd)

I understand the point you are trying to make and fully agree that the ability to switch them is a good thing, just that it didn't quite add up.

do some research mate, because auto lockers are always locked and unlock under load (when turning on bitumen etc)

save your money and buy air lockers. i have to say i use my rear alot more than my front because i hate changing cv's.

Geez Noboat, For 17 years of 4x4ing you'd think you would have upgraded from a dodgie old hilux to a serious 4x4 .

Ha, your a funny man. I've never heard that before, very creative, must of taken a long time to think that one up.

I did re read my post and discovered what I had said may have been taken out of contex. I admitted I was wrong, and you could still come up with that wise crack, good work your a legand. All good, I was wrong, so there I said it again.

I suspect that it depends on what type of 4 wheeling you do as to which type of locker you choose and which end to put it first. It also depends on your budget as to what you choose. But for the ultimate in control as long as the driver is educated enough as to when and where a locker should be used, then a switchable locker like an air locker would be the best.

BTW what is a serious 4x4, and what makes my Hilux dodgie ?
I don't ever recall me buying a stolen 4x4, or it being so poorly built that it falls apart.

Re: auto or air diff lockers

If I where to put them in mine, I would choose detroit softlockers, used to run around out west in multiple GOV petrol GUs with ARB air lockers, they where Ok but not to be relied on to get you out!-if you entered without them on....crappy things they can be. Steering in mud is most severly compromised for direction....my trip in a GQ with front and back softlockers....what a gentlmans dream to drive offroad was like chalk and cheese compared toairlockers.

The front or rear first debate....does it actually have a conclusion??...not yet that I have seen except possibly do the front first if mostly you crawl up stuff, if you bolt up/through no matter what, do the rear first...all IMHO.

    cheers fnq
