The Photos Could Have Been So Good

Everyone has been telling me how many Marlin have been around and after “Reel Scream” rang me yesterday telling me of his Marlin adventures, I couldn’t resist.

Tammy and I left this morning at 3:30 and headed for the Trench. The first lure had not even hit the water when the reel screamed into action. It was only a Striped Tuna but it was a great start.

About an hour later just west of Hutchies, the little lumo went off again and we boated another tuna. Another quick photo and back it went. The rest of the morning was pretty boring as we trolled from Hutchies to the Trench and back at least four times.

Then, finally, off in the distance we saw birds. Lots of birds. It was just on 12:00pm when we reached the birds and lots of bait. That bloody Lumo went off again for the third time so we thought it was another Tuna but this was something a bit heavier.

Then off in the distance we saw a massive 30kg Black Marlin launch. OK so it wasn’t the biggest but it was a Marlin. Jeffo, you would be proud of me. I didn’t even lift it in the boat and released it very gently. It seems the Marlin wanted the Lure at the last minute.

Back in the water and the lures were going off everywhere. It was amazing. The next Marlin took it, dropped it, took it, dropped it, and finally leapt into the air and said goodbye. Back into the water again and the Lumo goes off again but this time the Marlin was at least 55kg. Beautifully hooked through the bill. He was very angry so we talked about it and let it go without lifting into the boat.

In the water again and this time it was only a tuna but it did take the Lumo. In the water again and Tammy is onto another Tuna ON THE BLOODY LUMO...
We had now been at this for an hour but the Marlin kept coming. A 75kg black leapt into the air and dropped the lure but as Tammy was reeling the lure in the Marlin chased it again and finally grabbed it with a real commitment. Not enough commitment though because it fell off again.

We could have kept going but the wind was starting to reach the twenty knot mark and it was time to go home.

What a great day UNTIL!!!!! I had a look at all the photos. Don’t you hate it when you select the wrong setting on your camera.. The photos could have been soooooo Good......

These are the only photos that I could salvage..

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Re: The Photos Could Have Been So Good

    Hi Mick,
I have found that pink seems to be the “In Thing” with Mackarel so I have wired up a 10” stick bait with a wired stinger. I have used this for years and it works a treat.

Jeffo, I love your “ passion” I am not sure if people will ever not lift the fish ( Me included) but I love your passion.

    Icekight,

We trolled for seven hours before we hit the Blacks. I did see a Black and white boat about 18’ out there. You were most probably smart and got back in before the wind blew up.

    Hi MarkLong,
The short answer is no, but if you look closely at the purple skirt you will notice that there is some very heavy winch cable tied to it. The purple is the only lure that was wired. The Blacks were not fussy at all. They kept coming back even after we pulled the hooks out of their mouth, they kept on chasing the lures.... Unreal.
