hi all
went for a fish monday arvo in my tinnie out off noosa around laguna bay with a mate james. first drift got a hit and hooked up to a good fish after about 5 minutes the leader knot snapped, i was soo devoed think it was a good spaniard.
after about another hour of nothing hapenning james hooks something. he is going to write a thread so ill let him tell the story. i hook onto something big when james is still onto his fish i loose all my braid then nearly all backing but luckily james got his fish in so we go off chasing after mine.
after over half an hour of chasing the fish we get colour and its a solid yellow fin tuna. after another half an hour of the fish slugging it out deep we finally get a gaff into it and its in the boat. yeeeehhhh so happy measurd about 1m and maybe 15 kilos +?? some people that saw it reckoned 20kg what do u guys think? i know my skinny arms were strugling to lift it.
caught on a ganged pillie on a 4 to 8 kilo berkly dropshot and a cheap shimano 4000 reel with 10lb braid and 40 lb leader. think i was a bit under gunned was trying to catch some mackeral.
You can alway jump on the bathroom scales at home with the fish then jump on again without the fish and the difference in the two readings is the weight of the fish. Good fish on that gear but prob the lower end of the spectrum with the weights suggested.
thanks for the replys. not to worried how much it weighed just interested what people thought because i was pretty unsure. stoked none the less.
thats a good idea smithy, if i get a whole fish home will do that.
This one my deckie caught about 3 weeks ago went just about spot on 10kg (using our pretty precise postal scales).....yours might be this size or possibly a couple of kg's heavier...though it's difficult to tell from a photo(my deckie looks more solidly built then you as well).....and as we all know a lot of fisho's tend to exagerate size.....
Whatever it weighs though it's a nice fish and if you have a look in the recipe section you will see my thread asking for ideas on how to use yellowfin....it was just sensational cut in strip's and dipped in soy and wasabi...was equally as good done up in rolls(sushi)...enjoy..
The one in my avatar went 15kg, and i am not holding him out, so you would be close.....though it doesnt really matter....its a great catch and damn fine eating...especially raw with the soy and wasabi.
