    mackay fishing

    hey guys,

Will be moving up to mackay come jan next year, hoping to gain a bit of knowledge of the locals up that way as to where to fish and what the usual catches are... dont expect any secret spots unless, though that would be good. Any info would be greatly appreciated as i have never fished the area!..

    Thanks,
    Al

    Al,

Plenty of creeks plus the reef fishing out around the islands. Depending on what sort of gear you have. Are you the owner of a boat? What sort?

Catches range from whiting, bream, flathead, grunter, trevally, macks, tuna, to your reef species. Fresh water as well in the upper valley, barra and sooty grunter in the dams.

I'm always looking for a fishing buddy for my tinny so see how things go.

I'm from around Hay point (obviously!)

Where about are you to be living?/working?

    Regards

    Steve

    Re: mackay fishing

Will be fishing out of a 4.1 polycraft fitted with a 40 etec (think it would really struggle to get me out on the reefs!). Will be working an hour and a bit west of mackay in the mines however hopefully be fishing most wkends!!! Living in the camp during the week so i think by the time fri comes around i will be pretty keen to get amongst it. Might have to catch up with you when i move up there so you can give me a guided tour Steve... Oh yeah how far is teemburra dam from Mackay?

Tippers, Mackay has a lot to offer in terms of fishing. My favourite spot has to be Teemburra dam which your boat would be ideal for and dont forget Eungella and kitchant dams (Barra & Sotties). The Whitsundays are only about hour and a half drive north (Endless variety of fish). While your up that way you also have Peter Faust Dam (BIG Barra). There are also a heap of creeks north and south of Mackay. What mine are you working at?

    Re: mackay fishing

thanks for the feedback guys! Been up here for two weeks now and finally got out for a fish on the weekend. Fished the pioneer river in mackay and got a few good queenies and lost a couple of decent GTs, however no signs of barra or jacks! Went for a quick troll out to keswick island ( i think) outside the river mouth and lost a good fish (maybe mac) other than that the action was pretty quite out in the open. Was using bombers, B52s, cultiva's and slick rigs, thoughts on these selection?? On top of that i couldnt believe the tidal movement!!!! Unreal

    Re: mackay fishing

I would guess the island to be flat top or round top. keswick is about 40km from the river... I like to fish the river close, easy.. where were you fishing for the queenies?
