They become a whole lot more fun to catch on this gear and generally Snapper are not the terrors most make them out to be, they usually have one good run in them then they come to the boat pretty easy. The only time i would go heavier is if fishing over wrecks or heavy structure when you want a bit more abrasion resistance for that first run. You might also want to consider adding the Mann's hardnose 6inch jerkshad in baby bass colour to your collection, its one of my all time favorites

    Thanks Chris

I've done a fair bit of Snapper fishing (bait) ....... & this area I'll be fishing has in the past ......... lets say BLOWN ME AWAY Its pretty rugged & the snaps run to 8-10kgs .......... but its the by catch that can be the spanner in the works - big kingies & the occasional cobe (also the odd jew)
So like you ...... my preference will be the oversized bream gear - BUT I'll also have an elephant gun in the armoury

Its been maybe 10 years since I last fished there ....... but my last memory was a big run - bent rod & a scale the size of a 50 cent piece on my hook

Cant wait to have a go with plastics!

    Chris
Most decent snaps are after the drop has finished, smaller ones normally hit on the drop and seldom does a snap hit on the twitch for me. A count of 20 after the bottom works for me as long as the drift doesn't start to drag the plastic.

Off the cape however I seldom hit the bottom for snaps, they run at different elevations but still like the good pause as well.

Snapper are clean fighters but as you said it's the bycatch that can cruel you. The Sweeties can dust you pretty quickly, but Cobia, Jew etc should be fine on line braid, it's you quality leader that is vital. I fought a Cobia for 55 minutes the other day only to have the 16 lb flurocarbon leader rub through when the fish was coming boatside. Anyway, that's fishing, but at no stage did it look like rubbing me off on structure. It was a goodie too, probably between 35 to 40 lb on 10 lb braid and 16 lb leader.
You excess barra jigheads will be spot on and you will also find some of your bigger barra SP's will go well too.
I reckon you're pretty well armed and won't have to fork out too many sheckles at the local tackle shop to get up and running.

Lot's of good advice there! For me it's gulp 5" jerkshads and lighter jigheads, 1/4 to 3/8 ounce is plenty in water up to 25m unless it's windy or lots of current. I use two outfits mainly, a 2500 certate with 8lb braid and 20lb fluro leader and a 3000 morethan with 15lb braid and 25lb fluro leader. Lots of hits up high in the water column, I find the smaller (up to 3kg) fish school down deep and will be suckers for a slowly worked lure on or near the bottom with a bigger jig head (1/2 or 5/8 ounce) but bigger fish (up to 11kg here off Port Macquarie) are often up higher chasing bait fish and love a slowly falling lure on a lighter head, more of a fluttering fall than a plummet. Look for bait schools and drop through them, kingies, jewies and samsonfish like to hang around them too which is where you may come unstuck with the light gear, I like the little extra grunt of the 15lb outfit.
So many fish, so little time...
