being looking and looks like a panasonic toughbook is the go . planning a 3mth trip on the water . there r a bunch of reburbish ones forsale . anyone got a better idea for $1000 or less cheers
assuming you're using it in a cabin and not out in the open maybe you'd be better off getting two normal laptops and keeping a spare one with your nav software installed
Don't they make a relatively low powered basic computer all 12v and USB/serial etc non hard drive for mounting in 4wds underdash around half the size of a house brick, dunno it's power but it might run what you are looking at running. Forget most of the details now.
ty guys the best place to get a toughbook is the states lot cheaper even with our low dollar . but today bought a toshiba a300 from clive peters good salesman got me lol
you could buy a Mac Mini and put it in your pocket!! on a more serious note (before all the Mac haters chase me with burning torches) I doubt that there is really a true "tough" Laptop made, they are all pretty fragile, especially when some other environmental issues are thrown in, like Salt Air, spray, bouncing about and who knows what else!
That Toshiba should be ok, just keep it away from salt mist mate another option would have been one of those eepc's with a solid state Hard drive. Apart from the salt spray bouncing around would be my second concern with traveling with a laptop on a boat so having less moving parts is the best way to go .
Although the eepc's aren't that powerful, your Toshiba as long as you got it with 2gb of ram should do everything you need it to do for awhile
The only pc's I have ever seen survive water are the sealed industrial panel PC's. Seen them used in salt water environments no prob. Only problem is you pay mega bucks for them. Check out mobs like advantech etc.
