rod holders in tinnie seat advice

hey guys i need abit of help an suggestions im wanting to put some of those plastics rod holders u can get from bcf for around $8 in the back seat of my tinnie. my idea is to just cut a hole with a hole saw on the right angle i need an rivot them to the set but the problem im having is the foam under neath the seat an trying to follow the hole down through the foam for the rod holder to sit in. i was wondering if any one had any ideas how to make this easy or if any one has done it befor.

What if you carefully used a hot steel rod or tube to melt the foam away? You would want to do it outside on a windy day, I'm sure the fumes would give you cancer or make you sterile.....

hahaha should get 1 of my dropkick mates over to do it. i was thinking of getting the hole saw an attaching it to a lontg bit of some thing to use a lever an gradualy work my way down an try cracking out the foam after each go. the hole saw is about 50mm deep. thats my best idea so far.

Or you could dig away at it whilst holding a vacuum cleaner to catch all the foam. But the hot poker will give you a nice clean edge. Use a combo of both.

what if you got the holders that go on the back or front of the seat thwart. and you can put them at any angle you want.

The trouble with the rod holders attached to the front or back of seats is that you can't rake them towards the back of the boat.

    1. Get a 3 feet lenght of pvc pipe of a size close to that of the rod holder,
    2. Cut / file a number of teeth (don't make them too small) in one end of the pvc pipe and,
    3. Used the pvc pipe as a drill to make a hole to receive the rod holder.

Foam is soft and not hard to drill. Also, it's worth drilling right trough the foam so any water that gets in the rod holder can drain out.
By drilling a couple of opposing holes in the other end of the pvc pipe you can use a screwdriver to make it easier to turn/apply pressure.

I made the hole in the foam slightly smaller to get a snug fit for the rod holder.

I used pvc tubing as it was at hand. You could do the same thing using aluminium (or some other metal) tubing.

Hey Luc, that is exactly what I have done in the past. Just sit the rod holder upside down near the hole so you can match the angle of the tube as you saw through the foam and you have a nice frim fit that is strentghened by the foam supporting it. Works very well as you have suggested.

As Luc suggests, add the vacuum cleaner hose to the end of the pvc pipe and you will have zero mess as well. Pays to make some sort of quick guide to get the angle right prior to cutting the foam away tho, very easy to be a touch off and the rod holder sitting up on one side or end a bit.
