    Barra Closed Season

    Hi all,

I have been told that the Barra closed season does NOT apply to indigenous persons. Interested to know if this is correct or not.

I work as a disability support worker and take my indigenous client fishing. He wants to catch a saltwater Barra and take it home but I need clarification on this before we hunt Barra.

    Cheers

I'd seek further clarification from the Fisheries office on this, but I do know that if a person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, then they can take and possess under Aboriginal tradition or Islander custom. Whether this applies during closed seasons I'm not sure.

I see native fishing rights get exemptions from just about everything else, so they should be OK on barra too. Ring the local fisheries officers just to be safe.

As long as you dont target barra yourself, while hes doin it.......

Just got off the phone to fisheries and they stated that indigenous persons are exempt from Barra fishing closure however they are not exempt from closed fishing AREAS. This does mean that whenever you go fishing make sure you take an indig fella with you.

I know it's complicated with things like turtles and dugong. They're only allowed to take those for ceremonial purposes (I think), but I have no idea how that would be policed.
