Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
Mate,
id give landbased mary a miss.A lot better chance of snaring a fish at one of the creeks between tin can and maryborough. poona and boonooroo have camprounds and swan as well. you should be able to look these up. poona is good for a few jacks bream whiting and flatties. bear in mind all these places are lousy with sandflies if there is no wind. iv not fished tin can so cant comment. inskip point is another option.

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
We fish out of our canoe every weekend, and have even been out into the bay a couple times, so we are fine to fish rivers in it.
Land based would probably only be done at night.

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
Mate i would try kauri Creek, there is a camping area called the wood dump that had public toilets but they were burn't down and i don't know if they have been rebuilt. There is also a camping ground called Headley's that is pretty basic (as far as i know there are no toilets or showers and there is a gate fee i think) but has less problems with sandflies but not having been there can only rely on what mates say that have been there. What i do know is the fishing available to someone in a canoe is excellent, yabby banks are quite close and the fishing in that area is quite good.Local knowledge is seems to be the deciding factor these days in getting a feed of fish but i'm sure it won't take much trial and error to find the fish.

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
The log dump camp area is off he road to tinnanbar,Remember there is a green zone in Kauri creek upstream of the log dump and it starts about 500m upstream of the camp area.If you like to rough it there are a few good camping/fishing spots tucked away in the forestry between tinnanbar and poona.

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
We're off to kauri this weekend mate. Plenty of structure to throw at a jack, but the daytime fishing is generally pretty slow. Pillies or livies in the creeks at night work a lot better. If you like paddling you can always duck out the front for a tuna or a few lizards. Just watch the current out towards the bar. Can be a bit strong on the bigger tides and can also get bloody rough. Plenty of sand flies but a few extra beers fixes that. Cheers. Keith

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
Just got word guys there has been a pro camped at poona for 5 weeks. the dpi moved him on last weekend, as apparently there is a time limit for staying in some parks. Fishing was pretty slow last weekend so the boys said. Though not sure how hard they tried...

Re: Tin Can Bay vs Mary River
What could we expect to find while fishing with plastics/bait in kauri creek, and does anyone have any suggestions for what bait/plastics we could use?
Cheers,
snagking
