    Prawn nets and Prawn lights

Hi - we are going to Mallacoota soon and will try and catch prawns for bait - I assume we can like we have done at Marlo. Advice please on net handle length and light type - wattage. Also is there a cheap LED prawn light any one knows of? Many thanks Jim

    HI Mate
hope the picture works out, it's my homemade prawning lights. It's basically
just a low voltage halogen mounted on a cap (make sure the cap has cardboard in it to stop light coming through, usually about $2 from go-lo). Cost in total is about $3-$4
I normally use the 20w globes and a small gel cell battery (from Jaycar 7.2AH)
if going on foot. If in the boat, i just hook it to the boat battery and sometimes change the globe to a 50w one (although normally the 20w one is great)

best Prawning lights by far are the underwater ones, they produce no glare, are still good even if it is windy, will light up about 1,000 times better area than an above water one, most people use a Motor Bike or similar Battery, and make a Boogie Board float thing to put it on, and have a bucket tied to it as well, the leg rope goes around your ankle or somewhere and it just tows along behind you, easy as pie, works a treat and costs bugger all, but one word of warning, try it before you go out, balance and Board type makes a big difference.

Many thanks Rowan - do you think you could adapt this to underwater? Or is sealing water out too much of an issue? Jim

Not too sure of the brand, but they are readily available at almost any tackle store, most will sell bateries as well, all they are is some sort of sealed light on an Alloy handle, they are very bright and work very well, you will be surprised when you use on, costs are really quite cheap.

    hi mate
not sure on adapting to underwater. I know the ones Noelm is talking about, most tackle stores carry them. I just find it alot easier to have all hands free to scoop etc than holding one on a handle. You get no glare back from this light as it is all projected forward above the hat. If walking, i just put the small gel battery in a backpack or shoulder bag, they're not very heavy
