some of the trophy fingers come from full moons particularly here around townsville...window of oppurtunity is small...all you need is a light brighter than the moon (18/24 watt fluro works fine for me). im talking the big fellers tho...which i will only release they are far to valuable, i limit even the 60cm fish to only 2 maybe three if gut hooked. they just take far too long to breed. They won't reash sexual maturity untill nearly 45cm...around 8 yrs old...yet you can keep them at 35..the southerns up this way enjoy that, i think it is a shame.
Rhyce,
Couldn't agree with you more - and its good to have as much info/publicity about these beauties as possible because they should IMO have tighter size/bag limits. It's ridiculous barra are subject to such stringent restrictions but they grow/copulate/populate far quicker than most 'trophy' fish; particularly when you have a slow growing species such as these which can be targetted and caught in siginificant numbers because they're schooling fish.
In fact the guys recently caught illegally netting in Bowling Green Bay turned out to be be specifically targetting fingermark because under the current bycatch rules fingermark are designated 'keepable bycatch'. So you can imagine whole schools of sexually mature fingers getting nailed in one shot.
I've been waiting for Troy to pass the info on to me before spreading the word via this forum as this is one fishery we have the chance to help.
...Nothin' wrong tho' with setting our own size/bag limits...
Levinge, what did he say? He said he might put it in - I had no idea
Mozza
yea, im good mates with troy and involved with alot of this, even barra in my view should be dropped to 3 barra ! but the limit should be 50 cm - 80 cm...thats it how many time you caught barra over 50 under 58 ? heaps and its far better off the average fisho getting 2 or 3 this size and leave the breeding female they may get later in the day, and any one in my view is far better off keep 3 smaller fish as they are better in all aspects.
I agree that it is totally stupoid that its called 'keepable bycatch'..i don't have much time as it is with pro's...being that i am the scretary of the twin cities fish stocking society and they all want to do is take take take but i don't see any money not even 4 dollars for 1 fish to be restocked into the weir but every wet they sit in the bay targeting the stocked barra that have come over the wall.
I don't think everyone should agree with my views but in the future i would like a better fishery not a sustanable fishery as the dpi keep saying, i want an improved fishery in the future.
im pretty sure i have met most of you guys at various places ie the warehouse etc etc etc.
