Was my Bday on the weekend so called in all privileges to get a 'get out of jail (domestic commitments) free' card and go canoe a part of our local catchment that I hadn't explored with a good mate I'd introduced to lure fishing. My Big Girl Bodhi (7yrs) wanted to come and since we hadn't done dad and daughter stuff for a while (the little fellla Jules 5 yrs usually gets to go fishn more often) I said she could come because she can swim properly and Julsie can't (had to have some excuse to bar one of em so I still had viable fishing space) and there were rapids and deep water involved so the little fella ended up accepting the story and stayed with mum (with a few protests!).
The part of the catchment we were is upper catchment and usually a bit skinny for canoeing but with the recent rain it was fully viable. I was mostly expecting we might come across a couple of eastern cod as I had caught one at both the top and bottom of this reach previously and wanted to see if there were a few more in between. Downstream and old road crossing presents quite a fish passage barrier under mostly flow conditions so wasn't expecting bass (although I'd heard at least one previous report of one showing up in this neck of the woods) - well turns out I caught two beautiful bass and no cod though would expect to when the water is lower and clearer they would be more likely come by. Both bass were in the 40's the second nudging 50 cm and I called it for a cod when I first hooked up given how heavy and hard it went as I tried to keep it out of the snags. Both went back fighting fit to give me some more stick another day - like the middle of summer when I'm expecting there could be a few more fish joining those already there. Overall was a great outing with mate, daughter, nice river and a couple of large wild fish - it doesn't get much better!!
Regards and tight lines - Jim
