    Info on color sounders

I’m curious to know how much difference has it made going to a color sounder.
Has it improved finding the fish or does it just make it a nicer picture to look at.

The reason I ask is that both do the same job but is color an improvement to what ?.

Just picked up my 1st colour sounder (Hum 787) after using B&W for 15 years so I'll let you know next week. I can tell you now though just from testing it in the driveway it's 100% readable from any angle no matter how the sun is shining on it, the old B& W wasn't like that.

    Basically, easier to read.
    Less ambiguous.

The colours all mean something. I have used an underwater camera with 80m of cord and a monitor for the last 18 months. I can now tell the difference on my sounder between rock, coral, plate coral, weed and sand. The weed and corals vary from blue to green and yellow depending on what type. These are above the hard red signal of the bottom which tends to only vary in thickness as the bottom gets harder. I had a black and white for a while and found them chalk and cheese. But someone like m62 that used one for 15 years would probably be able to read it just as well as a colour one. Colour is easier for the beginner, and yes nicer to look at. The cheap low powered colour sounders wont do as well as a quality black and white. There is a few things to consider but I think the most important is to learn to use whatever one you have well. Spend heaps of time on known spots and play with the settings.

For me the first thing i noticed and appreciated was I could read without sheltering the screen. I think its worth it for this alone. I have a centre console with on covers.

Additionally the colours define differences easier, its easier at glance to pick up different surfaces/structures and determine density.

    Re: Info on color sounders

Well Spears I hit Somerset Dam today to try the new colour Humminbird 787 and compare it to the B&W Eagle Fishmark 480. Eagle is on the bow with the trans on the electric motor & the Hum is at the helm but it can be swivled around so I can also view both when fishing at the bow.
After 20 mins fishing I wanted to get rid of the B&W Eagle & buy another colour Hum. Sooooo much clearer and easier to read. The seperation between bait fish and bass was also much easier to read also. Until today I've never used a colour sounder, now as soon as I can afford it I'll get another one for the bow, any offers for the Eagle 480????
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

Have to agree with all replys.......Set your screen to the desired background colour (In my case have found the White b/gnd the best for me).....the screen can be seen from all angles....can get abit dodgy with Polaroids on, I sometimes have to remove them....it's no big deal.....I certainly will not be going back to B/W....Whitto
