Thread: Crabbing and lost pots

    Re: Crabbing and lost pots

Lots of good ideas here and have taken them all onboard. But the best one IMO for shore based crabbing is to sink them tied to bricks, No one sees them, they arent at danger to boats or floating away and they are still there when you get back(hopefully full of big bucks) I think this is still legal also. Happy crabbing to you all. Ben

    Re: Crabbing and lost pots

Well, all I can say is very rarely do I lose a pot. In fact it would probably be a lot of years, but then again I always had home made wire mesh pots. We moved to Brisbane in April last year and I reluctantly sold my collection of wire pots prior to the move. When we arrived here, I bought 4 collapsible round pots from BCF. I've not lost any of them. But I do think their catch performance is down on the wire ones.

Losing pots can very often be a result of lots of things, and not always theft.

you realy have to look at the construction.

BCF have their "round Blue pot" on sale this time for $50 for four
    ##### have their orrange round pot on sale this time for $60 for four.. theirs are the jarvis walker pots... they will be imported
It seems the orange pots have very slightly heavier wire and slightly heavier mesh

I saw some realy cheap round pots for $10 each the other day....the cheapness was conspicuous by the weight of the wire and the size and weight of the mesh...the squares were huge.

Big brother tells me in darwin the " standard NT pot" is made ot of 1/2" rod and the top and bottom hoops are wrapped in rope... These cost quite a bit more than $15 each....seems they have some problems with snappy handbags chomping on the pots and sucking out the crushed up crabs......those handbags are pretty smart for a creature that has a brain not much larger that its biggest tooth.......

There is a bloke over redcliff way that makes a lot of stuff for the pro's and his rec pots are supsed to be pretty good ... but they wont be $15 each either.

I supose you get waht you pay for.

    cheers

My pots are up for replacement and I will be going to the bloke at redcliffe. The business is called crab'n'gear or something along those lines. From memory they are about $50 each for a standard collapsible estuary pot.
