    Cabling for bow mount lecy

    Hey,

Just got the motor mounted now I wondering whether to relocate the battery up to the bow (cheap option) or run heavy cable up to the bow (exy option)?

What is the generally done thing in this case? Worried about battery slaping around up the front mostly.

    Cheers.

Hi mate, think u will find most folks run a seperate battery for the lecky, I do. Couple of things to consider, firstly do u have an electric start for your motor? when lecky batteries go flat they do so quite quickly, so u may have some concerns with not being able to start your main motor if battery goes flat. Secondly, and I am only assuming here, u could loss some of your power over a long cable.
If u r worried about the battery slapping about in the bow, build a bracket for it or even a strap of sorts.
    Cheers, Pete.

I have mounted my two 130AH deep cycles right behind the thwart set just forward of midships. I also had to extend the lecky leads about a metre or so and fitted out the battery boxes with anderson plugs so its super easy to swap batteries and for recharging. I used to have the batteries down the rear and it made my 4.1 tinny too arse heavy. quite good now unless there is a 3rd person aboard, gonna have to work on saying no to the third i think.

Battery location depends on the boat and how its configured. Try the battery up the front and the back (you dont have to be using it). When you are using the electric it does not matter a shit where tha battery is, it only matter when you are underway.

My battery (120ah) is located at the stern (4.55 polycraft) and was put there after figuring out the best location. I put an anderson plug on the battery box, and another up the front for the leccy. I used 50amp cable with a 50amp self reseting circuit breaker in the battery box.

hey mate, i have a 120 amp hour deep cycle/ cranking battery...single battery for whole setup if your extending cables (which i did) the 8-10mm (preferably 10mm) cable is perfect, fits straight to a 50 amp anderson plug so you can keep the lead on lecky nice and short.

Aren't those 50 amp Anderson Plugs great for electrics guys.
BTW - they are $18 to $20 at most chandlerys and marine dealerships, $13 at Jaycar but only around $11 at Battery Traders in Moss St Slacks Creek.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a 4m fishseeker (old, 80 model I think) with a 25 tohatsu on the back. It does ride a bit heavy in the rear so I wouldn't mind the battery weight up the front. However, the lecy will be up there also now. Might have to try some different locations as suggested. I've only got two bench seats with a casting platform level with the front seat. Plenty of room under there, might try that as a start. Currently the battery (140 amp hour?) is down the back wired into a switch panel on the rear seat. Supplies the souder, bilge, anchor light, nav lights through fuses. With the battery up the front I only need to run a small cable back to this panel.

I wasn't so worried about the battery moving around, just the fluid inside, leaks etc. I've heard the new gel batteries are pretty good. Not sure if the come in marine grade? few $'s worth I'd imagine.

I'll look into those anderson plugs to, I was wondering what was available.

a gel battery is a sealed unit and well worth the extra dollars, a put vasolene in the anderson pleg this keeps salt off the parts where its not suppose to be works a treat
