I use a portable Next G modem plugged into a USB socket with an 4" antennae works great, up the coast and on the Western side of Moreton Island, plan to use it for weather reports and news on the big trip up to TI this time next year.
I am not relying on it 100% be nice to use when I can

i run next g in my laptop.
can get internet long way out to sea. ie off the cape, banks.ect
telstra the only way to go. all other isp tend to drop out alot, optus is getting better. telstra is 3 times dearer than the others though, i pay 29.00 forr 100mb pre paid no contract.

1. In context the generalization mainly implies the freq band with NextG being WCDMA 800/850 etc and 3G in the 1900-2100 range.

2. 3G is also a generic term for third generation as opposed to 2G (GSM etc) so will depend on how you want to split WCDMA from the other rubbish 1900-2100 stuff?

3. Typically "3G" only phones/modems are useless outside of metro centres

from what I understand, the only real difference between other 3G systems and NextG is the frequencies used and the number and location of base stations.

Of course Telstra will try and tell you different.

Of course there is a big difference in how well the frequencies travel....800Mhz travels about as well as UHF TV because that is arround the same frequency.....2000Mhz.....well that is closer to microwave and is far mor line of sight.
