It is possible, a lot of yachties do it for weather charts. Its not cheap though, I think telstra resells it here in australia.
Lots of reps on the road have thier laptop on the net via thier mobile phone but as anything that is mobile, coverage can be lousy and costs can be high.
Satellite also has roaming blackouts in some parts of the world where you might be in the dark waiting for a new signal to connect to.
I looked into satweb about 8 yrs ago and it was available back then but very exy and limited. They could not guarantee a connection for remote areas like the Tanami Track within a 24 hour period and said mostly you could be looking at blackouts in that area of up to a day. Coverage by now i would resume to be a lot better than 8 yrs ago tho.
Talk to Telstra for guidance atm.
Jack.
depending on where you are going, you might get away with NextG coverage with a plug in modem....perhaps an external antenna.
cheers
Look here: http://www.iridium.com/
I could not remember the name exactly, but google found it pretty quickly! Telstra used to resell Iridium here in aus, but not sure if they still do it. IIRC i think they claim 100% coverage across the world. There is another product available but the coverage is not as extensive, I cant remember what its called sorry.
The Ship I was on last year had Next G wireless internet, set up with an external antenna and booster. We had full coverage from Cairns to Cape York with only a couple of blind spots. Don't know what the installation costs were, however the company was as tight as the proverbial fishes @#$%! and wouldn't have paid much for it!

sat is to costly virgin blue informed me that more often then not a arial etc will reduce range
The only way I can see that an external aerial will reduce range is if it is either on a long length of cable or inappropriately placed.
I think a lot of people in the " computer market" are plug and play types and just expect things to work.
when you consider that all mobile phone communications are at UHF frequencies and above the cable losses are quite substancial
thinking that you can run 10 or 20 metres of coax off to an aerial without significant loses is a but of a mistake.
also expecting an on machine dongle or a desktop aerial to get good reception from within the boat is also a mistake.
so the whole exercise becomes one of understanding the limitations a beeing very carefull of detail.
cheers
we made enquiries with virgin and asked if a aerial would help . they emphatically said no and that they had done lots of research but found an aerial usually made it worse . that was a month back . thats why i,m looking for info from boaties actually doing it cheers
The telstra 3g modem I have comes with an external aerial. Its not much but it definatly gives you reception that you otherwise would not have.
In this day and age with telecommunication companies it is hard to get too the truth.
what specific types of areail have they tested.......is the modem designed to use an external aerial....is there an areila available that is compatable.
or
do they simply not want to deal with support issues involving aerials.
afteall you will only be talking to a call center operator not someone with any technical knoweledge.
And in this day and age it isn't all that easy to find someone with specifi technical and engineering understanding on a product.
cheers
An external modem with a decent antenna mounted up high just has to be better than a built in aerial. To get any decent gain on an antenna though it has to be somewhat directional, which just can't work on a boat.
Put your question on:
http://www.austech.info/
You should find some one can help
go the mobile coverage , with a web over satellite, the antenna would have to find and track the satelilite it is getting the download and upload too which is not to say that this impossible but I would imagine it would be costly ,
