it usualy costs more than you could buy one for, but you get the satisfaction of doing it, plus it is quite good rewarding fun, but as mentioned, you can just go and buy a rod, for much less than you will build it for.
ITS ONLY FISHING give me a break. mate its the best thing i have done in a long time. its frustrating to say the least, but when you get the chance to meet some poeple with the same interest/ different ideas, it can become an nightmare , but its worth it in the end. as for cost who cares , its yours, you made . enjoy it ,i know i do cheers

Theres a lot of satisfaction in making your own rod as for costs if ya after a cheap rod ya better off buying one at Kmart
But if your after a high end product with all the top end fittings, building your own rod can be cheaper than buying one at a Tackle shop .For example one of the last rods I built was a loomis GL3 8-10kg spin with nothing but the best fittings and silicon guides which cost $350 Aus for all the bits (that was of cause before the arse fell out of the Aussie dollar) most of the components where bought from USA
So a Top end Loomis for $350 for all the components isnt to bad
Plus you can customise the rod to your own needs
And its great to take a rod out ya made ya self and nail a good fish
Theres also a additional cost of setting up a rod building wrapper and dryer and other bits and piecies ya find ya need along the way

the only advantage of building your own, is being able to customise to suit yourself, like butt length, or types of grips and guides, or maybe a specific length or style, cost savings are not even worth mentioning, you cannot compete with a factory made Rod, no way no how, you may get a sligtly better product (maybe) but it would be pretty rare I reckon.
It all comes down to what you want out of a rod.
If it is to save money forget it.
If it is to own a custom rod that
1. suites your grip
2. suites your arm length comfortably not what the manufactors beleive to be the avarge Joe Blows.
3. Suites the type of fishing you want to specify the rod to do
4. Has the componets you want
5. Has been done by yourself
6. Gives you satisfaction
7. Start you on the road to being grey
You can rack upo the dollars very quickly buying things like titanium frame gold cermet guides and similar items. I did one about 4 yrs ago with titanium sic guides and the guides alone set me back 180 bucks. They will never rust tho..........
Mate I've recently built 2 rods and when you start you are going to make mistakes so you probably don't want to outlay big dollars to learn on plus its all about the fun of doing it and some satisfaction of using something you have made to suit yourself.
When the wind is blowing and you can't be fishing it's a lot cheaper sitting at home drinking beer and making a rod than sitting at the pub drinking and spending your money on more over priced beer .
You can save alot of money, by building your own equipment....I am lucky, one of my sons is a carpenter, another is a electrician and the last is a machinist....I give them a rough idea what I need and before you know it, I have a new piece of equipment !!..
Thread is another story !!.... ....I probably have spent my son's inheritance on thread !!... ....just call me a threadoholic !!...
You can spend as much or as little on rodbuilding...but looking back, I don't regret the money I have spent over the years !!...It's been my stress mangement, keeps me out of the bars and off the streets... and the best "fringe benefit" is the friendship from other rodbuilders!!.. You just can't put a price on that !!
