A bit of Exit Mould from the bathroom, perhaps? Or just some Sugar Soap and a scrubbing brush? We have a bit of mould on some of our PFDs, too... maybe I should have a go at scrubbing it off.

I think if they get a bit of fresh air and sunshine, then you should not get mould, perhaps just put them in the Sun for a while every now and then.

this is from a fella i know who makes canopies, very good canopies actually, i'm sure it would apply to life jackets as well..

Just another cleaning tip,it doesn't matter which state you live in.at some time or another you will get mould growing on the inside of your canopy. Most people will head straight for the exitmould or nappysan, thats a no no(you'll be getting me to resew it soon after) .

The safest way is to simply mix 1 to 2 capfulls of Softly fabric softner to 1 litre of water in a spray bottle and spray it on,some application may need a lite scrub with a soft nail brush, then just wash off with clean water.

This will help keep the mould away for a good 12 months,as you have just resanitised your canopy.

Wash them in a dilute solution of good quality bleach and dry in the sun.

Fill the bathtub half full and put about 1/4 cup of bleach in then give the jackets a good wash and scrub hose off and dry.

Steam is good also, kills any thing hot boiling water.

Then there is soda blasting that also will kill mould easy to do if you got the gear.
but if you haven't chlorine or bleach same thing. Or even battery acid and hydralic acid is the same thing just watch out for breathing the fumes WOW if you do.

But hey all you have to do really is wash and dry your pfd on the clothes line and no more problem if air is circulating constantly around the PFD.

    Cheers.

Using battery acid hydrochloric acid and nitric acid near tinnies is a big no-no. these acids eat aluminium very quickly. If it is not fluched out completely it will crystalize in hard to get to places and eat holes before you know it.

i use lemon juice and sunlight.
I cleaned my daughters doll and pram that was left under my boat cover.
Parts were almost black from the mould.
It didnt fade the bright colours at all.
I did have to do it twice to get it all though.

You could try liquid pool chlorine too........

As roughasguts says " Don't breathe the fumes !"

    Scrub and hose off.

Traditionally used white vinegar dilluted to suit ... failing that BC36 from Bunnings or any of the large hardware mobs ... not that expensive .... it also show the measures for dilluting it, nothing hard to it and it not that harmful compared to most other agents.

They also tell you to wash it off, but I found from using it a lot that when left on instead of rinsing it off it also prevents build up again and the mould just completely disappears.... good gear !!

Just a note that I'd probably try a spot on the material first to make sure it was colourfast ....

    Re: Mould on lifejackets

I not long ago did all my life jackets including the kids' PFD's with Exit Mould and it does the trick nicely. Just make sure once the mould has vanished to give the PFD's a good rinse off. Dry them in the sun and they come up like new.
