Heavy rod for Jew.

I started a thread in the Saltwater Forum but have been advised to enquire here as well.

I am looking into buying a rod to primarily chase Jew off the beach and rocks using large flesh baits and medium sized mullet as live bait. I’d like to be able to cast about 500g to the middle of a gutter with ease and smaller baits to the back of the second lot of breakers. I will be matching it to a 6000 series Shimano Stradic spooled with 30lb braid. It has to be light though as I’ll be holding it for periods of 6hrs or more. I would prefer it in 2 pieces but it’s not a real issue if it were one piece. My initial thoughts were to make it around the 12ft mark in length. The only thing I seem to be able to find off the rack is the Shimano Tiralejo. At this stage I’ll be looking at getting it built in January ready for next winter. I'm happy to support local industry so long as I can find the product i am after locally. So if anyone knows someone or reckons they could do the job properly...

Where are you as this may be needed for a custom job. No use finding a builder in Mackay when your in Tassy.

500gm is a fair chunk of weight to cast ...how far??

I'm pretty impressed by the Batson stuff I've seen.
I have an RCLB80M that I love, but at 8ft it won't give you the distance.

hi mate i recon ya cant go past the trusty old fsu5120 by either pacific composites or kilwell they are only 10ft but can easily be extended and are alot lighter then the heavy mt model rods makes a huge difference when chasing bigger fish

Hi mate, I use a SNyder FT5162 for jew, its a brute blank and is great off hte beach, but too long for the rocks which is why im building a newie. I was casting 6 ounces the other day with a 20 cm mullet. I got a 1 off snyder its an FT8144, Basically a MT8144 cut of glass but rolled on an FT blank, it has a brilliant action.

Since you are after that sort of distance with that sort of weight, i suggest going to graphite like the tiralego. But dont forget, it takes a hell of a lot of work to cast a big bait like that a long way, regardless of the type of rod.

i would reccomend someting like:
mt8120 10ft
fsu 5120 bit hevier than mt 8120
mt8144 12ft
i have used these blanks made and factory made when it comes down to the price of components ,snyderglas do make nice rods
if you do make one make sure you get a decent reel seat nothing worse than making a rod then the reel seet s@its its self that happened to me once

Alternately, LiveFibre Pendulum 1 or Z400-10x, G.Loomis SU1442GL, any of several suitable from Lamiglas, Batson SUR1659F, Purglas #2, 4.0 mtres 10-17kg.
Or any of the expensive, high end rods from South Africa, (Blue Marlin, Assasin) US (Breakaway, Wheels Rods), UK (Century, Zipplex, Daiwa, )or Japan (Daiwa and Shimano in Japan produce some mind blowing rods, with prices to match!)
There is some sensational gear out there, only limited to your budget!

like others have said just depends on what you want to spend. FSU 5120 like Ryansrods says are fantastic blanks...light but very strong because of very aggressive taper. Also you will find these are pretty cheap compared with some that have been mentioned. I have no experience of high end new blanks so cant compare or comment (but would love to try one)

My jew rod is a fsu 4120 with about 20cm taken off the tip...you can cast a 500g live fish easily yet it is really light to use but as Rockfisho says casting huge baits like this is bloody hard work.....and for live bait without hooks tearing out quadruply so. Personally I think you are being pretty optimistic thinking you will cast a 500g mullet "into the middle of a gutter". Unless it is at your feet forget it....particularly with an eggbeater (without losing a finger or thumb).

Most of the livebaiting for jews I used to do was always off the rocks for that reason (at Hat Head and SW Rocks) because you just cant cast far and off the rocks you gently cast into a gutter and the livey swims around so it doesnt really matter about distance...most of the fish are at your feet anyway.
