My mate hooked a remora that was hanging around the boat on Sunday and it was a fair size (maybe 5-7kg) are they any good to eat. Has anyone tried them?

they are OK to eat, not fantastic, but not horrible either, unless you have got nothing else to take home, then why not?, they tend to be a tad strong in flavour for some People.
Maybe you should do a search on Remoras here before eating one.
There was a funny story about that a while ago - they like to eat blind mullets
gidday lump,
if you have a good look at a remora (picture them without the suction pad on top) don't ya reckon they look almost exactly the same as a cobia? big brown eyes and the same markings as a cobia. first cobe i ever caught was 45 pounds. i was working up north on prawn trawlers and wasn't game to spend the time to clean it until i knew what it was. thought i had the worlds biggest remora that was missing it's suction pad! as far as eating it goes: (from other web sites) research has shown that a lot of remoras feed on fish crap (from big fish and sharks) which may be why they may have a strong flavour. pacific islanders use them to catch turtles and large fish simply by tying a line to them and throwing them out in the general area of a turtle or fish and using the remora's suction to bring in dinner. apparently they never ate them as they were tools for catching supper.

cracker of a thread on eating remoras a couple of years back. Guarantee you will never eat on if you read it!
Jeremy
Yeah read the thread of 04/06 and found it very amusing. I will make it my mission to catch one the next time I see one and tell the deckie(non ausfisher) that they eat well and see what he reckons. Just as long as it hasn't recently eaten!!!!!!!
I'll save everyone the effort of searching and post a link! Gees there are alot of banned members and members that dont post anymore when you read the old threads. Threads like this one should be given a run every year or so for old times sake.
Ian
Ps. now lets see if we can find "the boat of the year/ 2 foot chop thread"

Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
