Why block links in PM's ???

Why are website addresses blocked in PM's?
I can understand you not wanting them in a general post as you have to protect those who pay to advertise, but surely a PRIVATE message where one member relays to another a recommendation for goods or service doesn't cause any harm?
It's not like the goods or service are being promoted across your front page, or can be viewed by anyone other than the person the PM was sent to?

I'm not sure if this blocking is an automated process , or performed by moderators, but it's a bit like big brother gone mad.
