Thread: SOL or Alphas???

    Re: SOL or Alphas???

My friend picked up the washers at tackle warehouse in Brisbane and he dropped them in for me. I'm sure they'd do it for you. Don't worry about the main gear dude, read what Daiwa says about the R on their AUS website. They pretty much tell you to spool it up with heavy braid and do some skull dragging If they thought it couldn't handle it I doubt they'd be encouraging us.

    Re: SOL or Alphas???

just a little bit of info, no daiwa baitcasters have stainless gears. contrary to popular belief, stainless steel is inherently soft, unless it is alloyed with other metals, but then it is prone to rusting. it is also expensive. most daiwa baitcasters use brass main gears, including the stock alphas (purple). the alphas type f, type r and ito ai use a special hardened aluminium main gear to reduce weight. it is the same material used in the steez gear and my steez is proving more than capable on plenty of big impoundment barra, best to date 127cm, with reasonable drag (3-5kg, carbontex)

the other gear material daiwa use is a different aluminium again, employed in the saltiga reels, these reels are capable of drag in excess of 15kg! daiwa have used gears made from this material in the Zillion PE special. so there is nothing wrong with having aluminium gears providing it is the right kind

the stock drags are crap, my type f was great out of the box, but with just bass fishing turned to crap fairly quickly...at least it is an easy and cheap process to upgrade

Update: I tested the carbontex upgraded drag and it actually pulls about 8lb of drag but it is smooth consistent drag not lock down at 8lb then 3lb continuous.
