Question 1770 January 11 (landbased) any advice

We are headed up to agnes waters in january and we are trying to get a better idea of what to prepare for and where to fish. We will be staying at workmans beach.

We do not have a 4x4 so we will be restricted but we are prepared to walk a couple of k's for a more secluded spot. We will be taking a mixed bag of gear 10' graphite rod 13'6 graphite surf rod 7' light plastics rod
Where can we get to on foot to use this gear.?

Also we will be taking a range of 2", 3" and 6" minows (gulp) as well as some poppers (mainly for bream whiting and flatties). What other lure can you recommend and what fish can we expect to encounter up there.

We may also do some bait fishing. ANY advice from anyone who has been there and has been land based would be apreciated. We may also hire a boat so if you know prices or where we can get one from that would be awesome.

    Cheers

Hey mate I was in your boots about 2 months ago, go see the guys at the Angus waters bait and tackle shop (you will pass it on the way) and they will look after you (old AF members) If your into rock fishing then the 1770 headland has some great spots. If you do wade the flats watch the tide as it comes in fast! lots of stingers and bities! ;P Also the fish n chip shot at Angus was great! and I think the pup at 1770 still might be there (getting knocked down soon)
Hope you have a great time like we did!

    Cheers, Mick.

    Thanks mick.

I have already given them a call and they gave me a basic idea but I know a lot of fellas from here (AF) have been up on several trips so I was hoping to get a little more specific info.

What did you get when you were up there? What time of year were you there? What sort of gear did you take?

I have only been there the 1 time, it depends what you want to target. There are jacks and trevs up the river (you can hire a boat for around $80 for the day) or huge GT's, queenfish, kings, different tuna of the headland. There was a few dart around the surf as well. Id be taking rock/surf gear up if I went again!

    Cheers, Mick.

i live about an hour north and go there regularly during the summer surfing.

my best mates cousin pulled a 20kg+ longtail off the rocks around the corner from the point at 1770 last week.
he came up from sydney soly to fish the rocks.
if your lucky to get a calm day you have alot of options.
Springs and Deepwater national parks have great sets of rocks on eitehr sides of the beach. springs is your better option as its got a semi-sealed road to the path down to the beach.
metals, poppers, stickbaits, and plastics will be ideal... especially when you see them birds get within casting range.
GT, queenies, longtail, cobia are all capable of being landed off the rocks with the appropriate gear.

lots of whiting bream dart flathead.. off the beach too, easiest targeted with bait.
its no challenge to get beachworms from the open beaches.

as for in 1770 inlet itself.
    crystal clear water.
bream whiting flathead trevs jack cod.
topical estury.. yours range of plastics sound fine for in there.

    matt.
