Yeah, they're not pearls they r 2 bones, sort of the shape of a weird tear drop!
They really arent that special, personally the jaws of a bigger fish look awesome! once dried i think they look better!
Cheers Simon

Yes thats right what rat-king said , however they are used to identify the age of a fish when the earbones are cut in the correct plane or axis and examined under a special microscope
yep as above... the older fish the bigger (we called em JEWELS)...
if u expose the backbone behind the head there is a swollen section, cut that open and the jewels are in there (loose and fall out)...
the larger ones have been used for jewelry such as cuff links, pendants etc...
should have a box of them round here someplace but dont know where..
the ones from a 30kg+ are quite large
cheers chris
ok thanks guys, these jew are around the metre mark and not those proper BIG jew. Thanks again for all your comments.
At about a metre the jewels should be about double the size of a pee.
Here's one i prepared earlier (read:first jew!) Pure convenience they were sitting next to my head on a shelf. From the front, its a bit hard to make out, they are a curved, milky sheen. Very nice but ultimately still bone.
They're actually an otolith aren't they???
ffejsmada, thats perfectly correct. Its part of the inner ear that the fish uses to gauge its acceleration, depth, horizontal and vertical motion. There are other species that have bigger pearls but are mostly deep sea fish.
On another note, the easiest way to get to them is to turn the jew head upside down, pull the gills apart and remove the inside of the gill cavity, or at least pull it to the sides. Get a screwdriver and puncture the largest round vertebrae at the top of the spine and you should be able to shake it around until they fall out the hole.
Out of interest, the pearls from the fish in my avatar were about the size of my thumbnail
never looked for them in a jew but catfish have similar type of thing .

Heres a few more pics of them from a 25kg fish ...foxy
