    Crabing Laws

Im aware that the QLD regulations stated that for kids under 15 to use a crab pot they needed to be accompanied by an adult.
Im told (second hand) that law has just been amended and now kids can use 4 pots each unattended. Ive had a search of the DPI web site and cant find anything too conferm or deny this.
Is anyone aware of any changes? ... foxy

Haven't heard that myself yet Foxy but I'll keep an eye on the post to see what others say. Is it in the new Tide Guide 2009 maybe? Cheers, Darren.

here's to hoping... I would like to see this come in

My young boys (10 and 14) love to go crabbing, but sometimes it is a pain to have to go and find another adult to come along as well, just to qualify for the extra pots.

Foxy.....Heard the same thing myself but couldn't find anything to confirm so asked the DPI at the boatshow and they said they will announce it over the next month.
I think it's good...... as long as the kids are supervised somehow ..imo.

I had heard the same thing. I am sure it was mentioned in a thread here somewhere recently too, but cannot find any DPI press releases about it.

    There is now no mention of any age restrictions in the crabbing rules section on the DPI site;

My lads are actively involved in crabbing. The older one is learning to drive the boat to pick up pots, and they both hook the pots to pull them in. They both bait pots, and they are learning my preferences on where to put pots for some reasonable chance to catch a feed.

Because they are actively involved in crabbing exactly the same way as an adult would be, they should be entitled to 4 pots each.

A change to the regulations will be very welcome.

    cheers

    Re: Crabing Laws

    hi all,
it was on nugget's radio show the other morning. he may be able to add something

    apparently
the age restriction has been lifted, as long as the kid is able to manage the pots.
don't know to what extent. my 5 year old daughter can bait them up, pull them in, knows the difference between jenny and buck and size/bag limits, she will have a go at grabbing a sandie but her hands are a bit small to get a decent grip, she is pretty eager, and i am worried she will get nipped, so have stopped her trying to grab them herself, i mainly pass them to her to throw in the esky, she won't come at a muddie yet, guess we will have to wait for the fine print to see if she can run 4 of her own, she knows the regs and is pretty competent, but i think it would be generous if she could, a great change for the older kids,
    col,
might have to borrow one of the boys every so often, i can cope with being outfished
    cheers

This was passed around 18mths or so ago when i was on the CrabMac, just takes this long to pass along chain of the higher authorities to get it approved.

    Re: Crabing Laws

Having been a mad keen crabber for the past 20 odd years from since i was about 5, im glad to hear these restrictions are being lifted. My only concern is the ability of children under the age of 15 when crabbing with friends under adult age, being able to handle a big mud crab. Particulary now with the collapsable pots being sold. The amount of crabs that get the rear flippers caught in the mesh is high and these have to be manually released.
They can crush oysters so a finger will not be of much concern to them. I know that people will say but my child can handle a crab so it will be ok, but ive seen adults along with myself who have handled crabs for years get nipped.

It's a great way to encourage youngsters to get out and have some fun, i just hope some caution is enstilled into them about the potential hazards of crabs and body parts

    Hey Foxy

As has been mentioned earlier, Nugget mentioned it on his show last Saturday week, yes, the law has been amended taking away the minimum age of 15.

Evidently the new law states that the person must be capable of operating the pot / net by themselves, ie; don't think a 2, 3,4, 5 year old would be capable.

Good news for me with a 14 yo who I usually crab with.

    Re: Crabing Laws

I am all for the change of law and I don't think it really matters for the children at any age beign able to have thier own lot of pots, I know there are people out there that take out a friend who cannot 'handle the pots' just so they can have an extra 4, unless they make the crap pots competency based training.. lol and the DPI would have to asses each crabber... I bet there would be a few kids out there under 14 who could school me in crabbing... I say give them a go and to those woried about a crab nipping their child be more worried of them playing with fire or something like that... Everything cost so much for kids to do these days let them enjoy the simple things.
