When fishing for mackrel using a float or balloon how deep do you set your bait below the float or balloon

Usually only about a metre. They'll soon see it if they are hanging about.

Re: Mackrel Fishing
To me it depends on water clarity. Dirty water, they'll be down deeper, and i've found won't often rise for a feed. Last time I had a floater out for mackeral I wasn't using a floater is that makes sense, just drifting an unweighted pilly down in the current because they were deep, so deep they were nipping the sinkers off our paternosters while bottom bashing in 30m of water. That day there was a lot of coral spawn on the surface.
Just play it by ear each time, you can set it one on the surface, and one deeper, and change over to which ever one works best on the day.
