    Caloundra (Golden Beach) - Recommendations

The family is heading up to Golden Beach soon for a quick holiday. I'm keen to get the boys out for a fish, particularly my oldest (7).

Although we don't have a runabout, we won't be entirely landbound, because we have a 16 foot canoe (outriggers both sides for stability) running a 4hp Yamaha.

I'd love to hear from people who are experienced in fishing the area for where we might get onto some common species that are good for the kids - whiting, flatties, bream. Will also have a go for some squid and put a couple of pots in too.

Is it worth tanking my yabby pump with me - are there any holes up that way.

Any help appreciated. Our last holiday was rained out, so am hoping the boys can get onto some fish this time around. I have many great memories of this as a kid and would like them to have the same

as a Golden Beach Holiday Fisherman, I reckon I can speak with experience here, although a few of the locals will know heaps more, I visit at least twice a year and Fish there a lot, best place I have found for Flathead (especially on lures) is right near the Hire Boat guy, lots of good ground there, and I always get a few, plus the Family can have a swim and muck about as well, then there is the flats near the Powerboat club, right near the ramp area and were the River (passage) goes up and under a bridge that goes to Pelican Waters, caught heaps of Bream and Flathead there, as well as some good Whiting, the Bridge is OK for spinning, got a good Jack there and some Trevally, be careful with the Family and the Canoe as the current zips along pretty fast at times in the Passage. So there you go, pretty easy Fishing, will always get a few and good Family fun as well.

I forgot the Yabby pump, take it by all means, fresh Bait is always good, and get the Canoe and go straight across the Passage to the Bribie side, I have got some really big Flathead on that side right at the corner where a channel comes out from the Island side.

You will get yabbies opposite the boat ramp at Bell's Ck. You can also poke up into Bell's for a couple K if you want.

There is a hole opposite the boat hire bloke on the Bribie side where the channel is marked close to the shore. You could go there in the canoe, preferable on the incoming tide so you don't end up at Moreton Island.

Another good option in the canoe is at the southern end of golden beach drift across the channel and pick up flat head and whiting.

There have been a couple of references to current strength. Do people think that my 4hp may not be a match for the current??

you will be Ok as long as you don't get too close to the Entrance, the current is fast but safe enough up the Passage a bit, I have rowed across without drama.

Some good whiting to be had on the many flats in this area at this time of year. Yabbies will be easy to pump and make a great bait. Fish them light and shallow over the banks as the tide covers them up.
