From 4 feet to 40 feet. The last few jacks I've caught recently have come from 4-6m of water right on the bottom well off a snag on soft plastics.

It is not so much a perfect water depth, its more if it is a habitable snag in a good location for a territorial ambush.

Any thing over about 6 inches I'll have a throw at, I've pulled 1 off a snag that shallow. I think the snag isn't just for there own cover but it attracts bait fish, so they can sit off a snag that's to shallow and watch from a metre or so back and come in when there is pray there.

I scammed a 53 cm Jack in about 40 metres of water at Roonies on Saturday...

First and best. Poor bastard suicided on a hussar on 7/0 circles & 50 lb mono.

    Mmmmm tasty!

Backing previous comments, its not depth but the snags and habitats. If you think a jack could feel safe in there and still ambush bait fish from it, then throw a lure in there.

Again in saying that, I've caught some in areas that are channel like sand bottoms with zero snags... however thats not the norm.
