Fishing outside the Green-Zones.
Last weekend my decky and I fished the mouth of Tin Can. As there are 5 Green-Zones in Tin Can now, 25 years of local experience is worth nothing. So we had to look for new spot x's.
All is not lost. We found several spots and over the weekend caught 10 different species of fish plus 2 fish- for- fun species. We used mullet strips, small pillies, squid, and prawn and hard-bobied lures.
We found that where the sea-cows were grazing, they stired up the bottom which in turn attracted fish to hit the small crabs, prawns etc disturbed by the Dugon.
Species netted using this method were, Snapper, Cod,Moses Perch,Parrott,Trout, Fingermark, Bream, Flathead and a squid. Not all were legal size and the live well only took 1 Flathead and 1 Snapper. All others were released unharmed.
The next day saw us after Mackrell surface feeding with some schools within 8 metres of the boat. Great fun with all released.
At one stage, we had Dolphins, Dugon, Turtles, and Mackrell within 20 metres of the boat.
I know that the closures are hurting some fishermen but, we proved that a change in tactics can have a dramatic effect. We used to fish for Whiting,Bream and Flathead up the now closed creeks. Now we are fishing the open water for other species. We will adapt.
All is NOT lost
