New artificial reef systems for Moreton BayI found this media release from the Austra

I found this media release from the Australian Marine Conservation Society dated the 20/10/08. There is so much happening lately it may have already been posted here and I missed it. It makes interesting reading.
Anyone know where the bulk of there funding comes from.

I also found this list of Queensland local members on there site which we can use.

    I particularly like this Quote:

"Conservationists expect that these reefs are a trade off to fishing interests for
the new green zones created under Moreton Bay's new zoning plan. While many fishers know that they don't work, many others are not as well researched. "

Its my understanding from this paragraph that the very people you petitioned so hard for the Green Zones in Moreton Bay have themselves admitted they don't work, and only those fishers with a bit of grey matter realise it, everyone else is just a mushroom ie, kept in the dark and fed on bullshit.

I see the problem with creating three new artificial reefs as being not enough being created. They should form swim highways from reef to reef right along the coastline. The more habitat in a dotted line the less the chance of overfishing in any given area.

His ideas do not hold water as nearly the whole of Redcliffe foreshore has reefs every hundred metres or so. Being so accessible by even a bathtub you would think that it would be fished out......not at all.....too many areas of habitat to fish out. The same should be adopted for artificial reefs. 2k max offshore and no more than a km apart in a dotted line for 200km north to south as a start. Smaller more numerous reefs will protect much larger numbers of fish with the more habitat created. Why bunch all your efforts on 3 offshore reefs that are accessible by probably 20% of boat owners?

    Jack,

Don't quote me on this but I think there in a minimum depth that artificial reefs can be laid so they don't get carried away with the wave and current action. It will vary to area to area to but I remember reading 15 to 20 meters as a minimum. Your right thou it would be good to have some closer to the mainland and more of them........
