inskip again

Time has come too book the annual christmas camping .Been plenty of times on fraser ,North shore,tin can bay and further north ,we never stopped at Inskip .This year however i gave in to the kids nagging to take the dog with us and we /read she/ decided on Inskip .Question is which campground out of the 4?We got a 15x12 tent and all the tarps etc ,would prefer a grassy/sandy area .Prefer the 4 by acces only .Going up on the second so finding a place to set up wont be a problem .So which one and why?

I like the beachfront sites close to the northern edge of the cutout for the Inskip leads. It's part of the MV Beagle campground but I suggest accessing it from the beach so you can get a better idea of the area.

Reasons:
It faces north so is more protected from the prevailing SE winds
The section of beach out front is part of the 40km/h shared zone
Good beach access
No neighbours on the beach side of your camp
Good view of Fraser and the WB bar

Are you sure you have to book a specfic campground at Inskip? I thought it was a free for all.

You're right Steve ,i had another look there is only 1 option in the second dropdown menu which is inskip point camping area.

We've booked online as well heading up on the 22/12 coming home on the 2/1 all going well....
Hope to have the new boat in tow so will restrict my options for camping.

Yeah you definitely don't have to book a specific camp ground. Just decide when you get there. As Brad said, the Northern-facing section is good to get out of the wind. The Sarawak and Beagle sections can be a lot busier than the other areas. I usually camp in or near the Natone area as a compromise between minimising wind and minimising rowdy neighbours.

In trying to get out of the wind up there does that significantly increase the sandfly problem up there - what has your experience been up there with them?

That's a very good point nmt. Can't have it both ways I guess mate - especially in the warmer months. We've found those outdoor mozzie lanterns work well and we also take some mozzie coils.

Yea we have the same citrenella candles, mozzy candles, around the camp site and have the mozzy coils that are in those purpose built tins that they come in one in each tent b4 bed and alls good usually.

I can't answer specifically either way since I haven't really tested that before, but my gut feeling is that it wouldn't make a great deal of difference. Even if you are in an exposed spot, you're not going to sit in the gale all day. You'll set up tarps or other barriers to try and reduce the wind. Therefore I think the sand flies would still bother you. Still definitely worth taking other measures to deter them, IMHO.

Yer its an interesting one. I am a big fan of the camping away from people as much as possible - one of the big benefits of a boat - you can get to places others can't and therefore avoid the crowds a bit more.

The only deterrent to that is generally sandflies/midgies. I am one of those lucky people that the s'flies just attack and I react pretty badly to them - recently did a weekend at short island with the family and ended up with about 100 red welts all over my legs - has in fact left a few scars. Probably didn't help that it rained when we got there and was then very still and I was running around trying to set everything up.

Doesn't really bother me that much (am pretty used to it having been reacting like that for the last 30 years) though but it bothers my wife and isn't great with the yopungsters (2 yr old daughter) although she was not too bad.

Was thinking of doing a beach camping trip up to inskip although with the second due in December it prob will not be until say Marchish next year.

I know the pin is particularly bad for midgies/s'flies given all the mangroves etc - are peoples experiences that generally they are not as bad at inskip??

Interested in peoples thoughts.

Last year we camped in on the right just as you hit the car parking spots toward the end of the bitumen road (just past the last dunny on the right)

Kind of opposite the little bay on the left.

As for sand flies, they were either blown away or drowned. It pissed rain and blew it's arse off the whole time we were there. We ended up coming home early with everything drenched.....

However, we shall not be beat...... We are looking to head up again this year but the week before Xmas this time rather than the 3rd week in January.

Great place if you like to camp with your pooch.
